I would still entertain the thought of a rebuild, but a noisy 3rd gear could be a minor issue, does the gearlever try to hop into neutral on the overrun in 3rd? Is there any noise in 1st and 2nd aswell?

Don't forget the requirement to fit a taper roller set in the transfer case, this alone is worth about $3k to buy all the parts for. There could be a chance of finding a secondhand one, but difficult. I would strongly suggest fitting a TR kit, as this is the only weak point in this transmission.

Hi Justin I will take it that your serious about the cost estimates to rebuild the box and transfer and are not trying to add some leverage to me selling it.:D Wow that sounds like a lot of dollars but then I am pretty ignorate when it comes down to whats involved. In third it does not jump out when revved and 1st and 2nd are noisy but not as much as 3rd and 4th is relately quiet in comparision. Sorry but whats a TR kit????

I hope you're sitting down. Several years ago I had my Lt95 rebuilt by a mechanic from Peck & Stokes, but he did the job at home. He allowed 40 hours labour at $20ph ($800).
We shopped around for prices on the parts we needed. Fred Smith came in at $2290, but that was for a MAJOR rebuild including main shafts, and it also had a broken centre diff. Total $3090. That's not tapered bearings, but we fitted Maxi-Drive inter thrust washers which allow an extra 1mm of contact on the gears.
You wont really know how much of a build your box will need until it's pulled apart and you can inspect the components. We were pretty fussy with mine and probably even replaced some parts that we didn't 'really need to', but I wanted to do it right the first time.

Ritters were $3868 for the parts only.
BMI were $2184

Not trying to scare you but yes, a GOOD full rebuild CAN be costly:eek:
It is more than likely just noisy layshaft bearings, these boxes can go for a hundred years like that, as long as it isn't REALLY loud.

A TR (Taper roller) kit is what makes the weak point of the trans, the transfer case intermediate gear train, unbreakable. This is the LT95's achilles heel. The Military versions are all fitted with them, and you can buy the gears and bearings/ shafts etc new but they are very pricey. I was fortunate to buy a complete trans with it already fitted, they are out there. The other good point is that if you were to buy a TR assembly, it can be removed and refitted to another LT95 if you sell the vehicle etc. A worthwhile investment in my book. Take Murray up on his offer of a test drive, you'll not part with the 4spd after that:cool:

I would fit an LT95 over any other trans also for the ease of adaption as bellhousings for the 4spd are well engineered and give no problems.
I know I can depend on my trans to drive anywhere, at any time, towing anything :)

I have often discussed with some mates, how good a 130 would be with an Isuzu Turbo under the bonnet.
And after going through an Isuzu conversion on my County, and chasing up all the components needed for the job, finding a Stage 1 Isuzu to break up for the project will make the whole project just that bit easier.

Well I am so so glad I did not tell you you the details be for I bought it, yes I think it is a shame also but perhaps C Col will be inspired to transform a few of his project with it.
