    This is a Stage 1

Hi all this is the Stage 1 I recently bought, I have to say it is a truck it pulls like a truck it handles like a truck its as heavy to drive like a old truck and it as noisy as a old truck.
    [IMG][/IMG]
But its GREEEAAAT MATE WOOF. I now understand why people consider these the best motor in a landy, it is still a tad noisy but hey nothing a bit of sound deadening should do to reduce it to a more exceptable level. The low down torque is great out pulls the 130s Tdi easily.
So its into the 130 this motor will go, hi ho hi ho not sure when but have a bit of preparation to get things organised first before sliding it in the engine bay. Purchased it with 6 months registration so am going to see what it will take to get a RWC. Was from a farm the mice have chewed all the wiring but the previous owner got most thing working by simply adding layer upon layer of wiring till things worked again. I have stripped half a ton of copper wiring out of it and still got every thing to work. The brake booster diaphram was busted had a spare and put it on and the brake are now better than my defenders. Which leds me to think that some thing is wrong with the defenders brakes.

The chassis it rust free as appears the fire wall, so feeling a bit sad to scrap it as it is it very good condition for its age the motor does not fume at all out of the breather or the tappet rocker cover. Definetly a keeper so will end up eventually selling bits off so if any body is interested let me know

So now I have to sell the 4BB1 series 3 (refer my previous Is this a stage 1) I have bought this is in Sydney at the moment and from what I can assertain it a series 3 with a conversion plate to fit the isuzu motor in it. Need to pick up in the next few weeks so will be open to offers or negotiations. There are a few minor body bits I want off it. If no interest then fleabay here we come.

Just a short question if I may what are the tappet settings are they done hot or cold and what it the sequence in which to set them and is number 1 cylinder at the back or front of the motor?

Also a big thankyou to all those out there that have put up with my questions and inquiries so far, I am sure there will be more to come but thankyou all so far.
    Kindest regards
    Garry

    Garry,
It looks very clean for a farm vehicle. I like the remains of the flames on bonnet and front guards. What a ripper!

Good find Garry, 130 here we come

The trans is worth swapping over too, as long as you TR bearing convert it, and turbo it, and fit 33"s, a power steering pump( as the stage 1's didn't have the county set up with a PS pump in the timing cover.) and and and ...

Yes thats what I thought, when I got it there was half a hectare of paddock underneath it. That was relly good as it has stopped water pentratong and rusting it out.

    Hey Justin
Yes very happy with it, not sure about the box yet though, spoke with CHT I am going to explore putting in a late model 380 really do want a 5 gear option. I think my 130 is a late model R380 so we will see. Yes the steering pump what do you think is my best option or way to get one. I understand that isuzu has a spot for it just need to slot it in below the pump, is that right? As for the trans what ratio is it likely to be? Yes the turbo will come but first its slide the motor in and get it going, turbos a bolt on affair really. As for and and and I will pace myself yes maxi axels but not until I break one so to speak. Exciting project, I love the low down torque its soooo much better than the 130 Tdi loaded with gear, even unturboed.

Sure you've been really helpfull, wish I had a few more stage 1s they seem popular for parts. Lucky I have the defender other wise it would have stayed complete looking forward to getting things happening. What do you know about the
R380 late suffix conversions? I am pretty well leaning towards it not sure if my 1997 130 has the later model box would be grerat if it does, how to figure that one out, were is the gearbox number located on it?

    Kindest regards

Excellent, thanks Garry, PM me with a $$$ value when you are ready

The G'box number is located directly under the filler plug on the side, on a machined flat surface. The Suffix letter you are after is a 'K' or 'L'. This denotes the stronger box AFAIR, best to check the Ashcrofts site anyway. I reckon if yours is a 1997 build, it'll be a Suffix 'J'
