Mine are only in there to stop compression escaping too! They have never been hooked up, and I have never heard the engine crank more than twice, even in minus temps.

Only time I have had to use them is in sub-zero temperatures when the starter was not working properly because of what I eventually diagnosed as a faulty engine/chassis earth, or when the battery is on its last legs.

There was a wire from mine going into the loom.......
But I tried hard to find what it was connected to but never have. No power going to plugs.
Started fine when covered with snow over night.

I've still got the 24v glow plugs in mine, just to plug the holes also. You really don't need them with these engines.

    Thankyou

Thanks to everyone for your comments I shall pass on your responses to him sounding like he needs to look elsewhere if he is having starting issues.

Just spoke to him he is having to turn it over around half a dozen times before he gets it to fire, he has put a new battery in it. It is only an issue in the mornings when he first starts it up after that it starts first go. So wondering if Isuzu's have a lift pump could it be on the way out and in the mornings the motor is having to prime to get fuel into the the bores to fire. Or that there are some other issues he should look at.
    Kindest regards

I don't think the lift pump would be a problem - if it was it would not start at all once it got air into the system. Best guess is that it is the engine is turning too slowly, so that too much heat is lost during compression. In my case this was ultimately the engine/chassis earth strap (LH engine mount) which in turn had led to burning of the (replaceable) contacts in the starter solenoid. A simple test for this sort of problem is to connect a meter (or test light) between the engine and the battery negative. This should show less than about 0.5v when the starter is operated. For the solenoid contacts, connect a meter or test light across the solenoid. This will show battery voltage, and should drop to almost zero when the starter is operated. If both these tests are negative, it may be a sick starter, or possibly compression is getting a bit low. Possibly a very bad spray pattern, but I would not think that would give hard starting.

Maybe the engine has done over the magic million Km mark, and is finally getting a tad low on compression??
