    Engine out

Well, I got the engine out today. Clutch plate has oil on it, I think from the gearbox. Flywheel is in perfect condition.

Had to drive to my next door neighbour's four kilometres away to borrow their 3/4" drive sockets to loosen the flywheel bolts. So far unsuccessful trying to loosen the front pulley nut using six feet of pipe on the breaker bar and a crowbar chained to the engine to resist the torque. I have left it overnight with penetrating oil and will try heat tomorrow.

I have new seals for both ends of the crankshaft, and will have to see if I can work out where the oil is getting out of the gearbox.

Any suggestions for the front nut welcomed!

    John,

Do you have an LT95? If so the front oil pump seal leaking is a common problem. Not all that common in the LT85, but can happen if the front bearing is getting too much play.

Are there any leaks from the engine seals at all? If not, I'd leave well alone.

Yes, it is an LT95. I'll have a look at the gearbox tomorrow. I will not be able to replace the seal at this time, as I have to have it going again by Friday, and to this I can't afford the half day it will take to go into town, assuming I can get one from the bearing dealer. I am pulling the flywheel off, but in light of your comment, if there is no sign of a leak behind it I will not disturb the seal. There is a bit of engine oil on the outside of the flywheel housing, but I think this is blown back from the front seal - which I am replacing if I can get the nut off the front pulley!

Hi JD, assuming you have air, do you or your neighbour have a rattle-gun or can you borrow one in the local area?

As above, I used some heat (to break the retaining compound) and a rattle gun to remove mine.

Unfortunately I don't have high enough pressure or volume of air to run a rattle gun. Heat I can supply, and will today.

Sometimes you find that the plate on the front of the oil pump on the box warps
IF you take it off and lap it on a piece of wet and dry on glass it will seal up and your problem will go away

Well, got the front pulley off - overnight penetrating oil followed by a hand winch pulling on a crowbar chained to the engine and six feet of pipe on the breaker bar - then gave the breaker bar a whack with a hammer when the pipe had a good bow in it.

Pulled the flywheel off, found the seal was leaking. Have replaced this and the front one, as soon as I finish lunch, flywheel back on, then the clutch, and it should be ready to go back in by dark. (have to make a pilot tool to align the clutch plate). Hopefully be able to check the gearbox situation too by then.

Meanwhile, we have a dust storm. Just as well I don't have the engine really in pieces!

I like the way you have made do with available tools Well done... Sounds like it would have been a hard one to do in the engine bay.

The warped housing is plausible as when I did the LT85 in my 2 door rangie it was leaking that exact spot. I also renewed the seals . A few years ago but costs around $75 all up. Still going well and no leaks yet!

We also got the dust storm today shortly after another sheet of iron off someones shed I suspect from WA M I KE 9 0 R R

Hope it all goes together well for you John.

    Tony
