A fault in the 4bd1's reliability!!

On the way home last friday night from a week away camping, we were just North of Taree when there was quite a large smell of diesel coming from the engine bay.So we pulled over and found that the steel injector line which leads off the top of the injector and on to the fuel filter (runs from the filter to the injector) had snapped off flush with the injector
I should mension it was leaking slightly beforehand but was fixed with a bit of silicone tape So maybe it's half driver's fault and half isuzu fault
Anyway it was un fixable without an oxy and silver solder so we called the NRMA and of coarse the county wasn't joined so a couple of hundred $$$ later a tow truch arrived and towed us back into Taree and showed us a mechanic to take it to in the morning.
He dropped us off at a motel and left us from there.
In the morning we went and had a chat to the mechanic, he wasn't confident enough to do the braze job him self so he sent it off to a brake specialist where they made us up a new section and brazed it back on
Cost us around $115 for the line and the mechanics time plus the motel cost of around $90 so that adds up to about $450-500 when we could have just replaced the line before hand for alot cheaper
Lesson learnt (again), anyway we got home in the end, here are some pics of the line we got made up...

You really should replace that soon. I wouldn't trust it for to long my self. This has been known to happen to a few before and will again. How old is it now
I try not to run mine at the rev range that I can hear it resonating for this reason. Made easy for me as have 35s and a 5 spd. Only a minor drama. Still the best engine Rover ever used as durability goes. Look at the dramas the TD5s have

I believe it is the ONLY fault of the 4BD1

My 120" had the same, spewing diesel everywhere, bit off copper pipe over the top and got the old boy to silver solder it up for me and all is good, I think a few others have suffered the same fate

same crap different bum, couple of weeks ago I sheered off the banjo fitting whilst bleeding the system. 30 minutes before hand I discovered my low fuel indicator light does not work anymore and err ran it dry.

Anyone explain the purpose of the spiral in the fuel return line?

Hi Dobbo, I imagine it would be to absorb some of the vibration in the pipe, reducing the liklihood of fatige fractures in the fittings. Cheers, 130man.

Our's has around 480 000km on it i think, could be more
I thought it might have happend to a few people on here, not shore what the spiral thing is, the mechanic just made it like that because thats how the broken one was
Don't worry will be replacing the whole thing as soon as we can get a replacment.
