    LT85 Damage

I'm putting this in the Isuzu section because I think this problem occurs due to the Isuzu vibrations- but correct me if I'm wrong.

I've bought a '85 County with a noisy 5 speed box. It turns out the only damage is the constant pinion gear, the front main bearing & a couple of the syncro blocks off 5th gear.

What do you guys reckon about the gear damage? As long as its not going to be noisy I think it might be OK. I'm really only going to have this County on the road to sell it so 90% is close enough.
Also, I'm assuming the 5th gear blocks shattered ( 2nd pic, top left of the pic with a good one just underneath to show what the bits were) due to the front bearing collapse & subsequent mis alignment?
The previous owner stopped driving, which means the rest of the box is in pretty good shape, although I'll replace layshaft bearings as well.

Seeing as a replacement shaft would need me to sell off one of the kids, I thought other opinions will help.

    Thanks,
    David

The rest of the gear looks to still have the hard facing so I'd use it again with out a second thought.

I have rebuilt final drives here in Headers and Bulldozers that looked far worse than that. Our JD header in particular was so bad I had to take to it with a die grinder. I've also seen this in Hi lux boxes. The bearing will likely fail before the gear if driven carefully.

Since you selling it on just stick it back in. It wont even make a wine with that bit missing. We all would agree It will be weaker but the cost out weigh that concern if its not a keeper. May be a good idea to tell who ever purchases it not to labour 5th gear

Sounds good, its the constant gear though, so will be the same for all gears.
I'm looking around the Web ATM, best so far is 80 quid from Craddock, but the part no does'nt match up & everywhere else is twice that.

Id still use it again if uneconomical to replace it. Shouldn't be a drama in lower gears as will have less torque against it in most cases. Hard to say but that would likely have around 90% of it strength I would think. Its not Turboed is it?

Nah, bog standard. I just found this mob in Pommy land. New bearings all round ( almost) incl the sliding blocks, springs etc, about $180.00 plus postage. Not counting the shaft.

Personally i would replace it. It is all in bits already, so another couple of hundred on a gear will give you piece of mind, and you can sleep better at night when someone buys it. (didnt you buy a car once which had rolled because the driveline locked up?)

Those box's dont need any more weaknesses than what they had from factory. My LT85 had a clean break in the main shaft, about an inch from the output gear. I have a LT95 now.

Try peter dequant (sp) at range parts, Sydney, he may have new or 2nd hand available.

Your pic only shows one side of the teeth with any clarity. This shows marks that indicate running with metal wear particles in the oil. This should not affect strength or noise too much, as long as the box is flushed properly to remove the wear particles.

I have no experience with the LT85, so have to assume the notches on the front of the teeth tips occurred when the bearing collapsed. These will have no significant affect on tooth strength. Use an oil stone to remove any burrs.

So if you can't source a new part, you could re-use it.

This is a common LT85 to Isuzu failure point, as quite a few of these bellhousings etc were misaligned from factory, causing this bearing to fail. My Uncle had this problem from new and after several attempts at realigning the bellhousing it was fixed. Some are as much as .050" out!

Dave Purcell in WA I believe did the repairs and mods to the 110 back in 1989 when it was only a year old and the first bearing failed.

I think Mal at Maxidrive also did a mod or series of mods to these boxes to last behind the Isuzu.

This is why I have an LT95.

The Isuzu 110. Solid and as dependable as a rock, coming soon with auto box😊
The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈
