    Rear Main seal housing removal

Any tricks to removing the rear main seal housing?

I have removed the ring of bolts on the rear, removed the two nuts and two bolts which hold the alloy plate on. I have also levered the oil seal out.

The housing will move 1 mm or so back at the top, but seems to still be fixed at the bottom. Am I missing something? Or is it just stuck to the sump gasket???

    Hi Ben,
have you removed the rear sump bolts. Also it is located on dowels into the block and has to be removed equally on both sides. It will sort of stick at the bottom as you remove it owing to the sump gasket thickness. If all above fails, loosen the sump bolts and allow it to drop a little...Brian

Thanks Brian. I have removed the two sump nuts at the back, but not the studs which seem to go into the seal housing - do I need to remove these???

Do I need to remove more sump bolts than that?

The two sump bolts that go into the seal housing have to be removed. It sounds as if they have been replaced with studs, which will have to come out. (Or take the sump off)

Strange that you have bolts. My (isuzu truck) manual shows studs there.

I have tried to remove the studs (using the double nut method) - but no dice. Looks like I will have to pull the sump off...

Second that - I recently swapped my sump over and I've had studs there as well.

Actually, I can't remember which mine had but I replaced most of them anyway when I ditched the thick rubber sump gasket, as the bolts used with it were not compatible with a conventional gasket.

Thanks guys. Pulled the sump off and the housing came off fairly easily. It was stuck to the dowels to some extent...
