    If its just a mark then fair enough - if it was a hole, then was Sheldon thinking of filling his adapter casing with oil...but then why, if the consensus is that the gearbox output shaft gets lube from the gearbox reservoir. None the less the shaft looks good.

    I came across a chart some time ago (not in front of me now) comparing the strength of spline counts - from memory Sheldon's should be roughly twice the strength of the sae10 and about 20 percent stronger that 28 spline (for example axles).

    Anyone received their new Sheldon spud shaft and input gear yet? Vern? Lotsa?

    Anyone ever had to source a new/second hand output shaft for their MSA5 gearbox?

    Waiting with baited breath for Sheldon to contact me.

    You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

    Rather than drilling the end of the gearbox output shaft I wonder if this could be considered.

    24mm x 1.5 pitch one end, and 10mm x 1.5 ta other, mild steel.

    Sheldon's adaptor has a minor diameter of about 33.4mm - this bore would have to be extended to accommodate the adaptor presented here - the question would be does his adaptor still have sufficient strength in the wall, given the extra space created. The example I give here has a wall thickness of approx 7.4mm (including thread). Wall thickness in the example given here could be reduced to allow thicker wall in Sheldon's adaptor.

    Allow 32-33mm to clear nose of shaft. The remainder can be machined off depending how much nose bolt engagement is required. For example, a minimum of 15mm nose bolt engagement would see a total adaptor length of 48mm (33+15).

    Could be, however considering;

    1. I haven't had a problem drilling out gearbox shafts (with $30 Bunnings Ozito drill and Frost HSS bits), then tapping.

    2. It's an extra part. More parts = more chance to go wrong. Less is more.

    Therefore, I'm not going to consider it. Unless;

    - someone can bring me a shaft that I can't drill out with my cheapo bunnings drill.

    The box is finished and ready to be dispatched. Sheldon is just working on the shift kit that needs to include the splitter lever. So I'm likely to get my hands on the finished assembly early next week.

    Had some wrong info on the split, if I were to use the 1.003 ratio set I purchased to upgrade the 28D box, (5th hi splitter in) the final would be around 1450rpm at 110. Not sure I need a 200kph Defender so think I'll stick to the 1.222 ratio.
