    Latest recommendation on Turbo type

I am looking at turboing another 4BD1. So might start getting some bits together.

What is the latest recommendation on turbo type?

I am generally thinking Garrett. I have previously fitted a GT2560 or GT28R. This turbo has worked very well and provided a considerable increase in the torque.

V.V.T. have come along since. Is this the way to go? Or should I go retro and fit a T3 .64 AR, no wastegate?

    I am leaning toward a T2 turbo as I have a manifold. However, I could go T3.

tobad you dont live in melbourn i have a turbo you could have heeeps cheep, its a garrett with an aireserch compressor i striped it down and havent had time to put it back together, i think its a size 60 if i rember. i foud that it was too big for my honda.

what are you going to run a bearing or bush type, i never liked how they run off the engine oil, when you cut the engine they run dry, i alwasy thought if i had a turbo i would run it off an electric pump, there is a company that makes them just for turbos, but they are like a grand just for the pump, i reccon its better to keep them seperated just incase one fails, it dosent ruin the other, eg, you blow your turbo and it psses your oil out and runs engine dry, or you forget to change your oil and it stuffs the turbo bearings . i sopose a turbo timer is a good compramize i just dont like the idea of leaving wile my engine is still running.

I have a GT2556V VNT on my 300Tdi and my Isuzu has the standard factory Garrett with waste gate. I think the VNT would greatly benefit the Isuzu, being a lower revving engine. The VNT has virtually no lag.
Although I'm happy with the performance of my 4BD1T, I reckon a VNT would allow an increased, and more even delivery of power/torque right across the rev range. I'm keeping an eye out for a good second hand VNT as new ones are a bit expensive.

    Cheers, Murray

I have a GT2560R, but if I was doing it again I would use a VVT turbo, without a doubt.

If you can find a suitable variable vane turbo, then do it.

I think a non-wastegated turbo gives you too many compromises. Also keep in mind the T3's have a bigger exhaust wheel which requires a smaller A/R number to keep similar spool to the T25/T28 turbos.

    Turbo

I run a TD5 turbo (Garret but not sure of the specs) on our Isuzu. Custom made an adaptor manifold from the factory Isuzu manifold to the turbo intake. I basically tapered it down evenly to suit and the result is virtually no lag. The reason we chose this turbo was a couple of years ago LR sold a heap of new units for around the $600 mark.

Very happy with the performance at 15psi.

We picked up a very cheap td5 turbo with low km's so are thinking of doing the same

I think it's a GT2052S. Don't know what the A/R ratios are but it's basically the replacement for the old T25 I run.

    TD5 has a Garrett GT2052 (452239-0003/4/5E), which is replaced by a 452239-0006. A/R 0.46

If you want fast spool but not much better performance than stock 4BD1T, they would be ok. But a little small if you want to tap the performance potential the engine is capable off.

I wouldn't bother with such a small turbo when for a bit more you could put on a VNT turbo and gain so much more. Anything from GT2256V, through to GT2556V, or even up to GT2559V.

    Turbo's

    Hey Dougal & Bush65

Do you guys have any formulas or basic set up rules for twin turbo's???. The reason being I have a larger Switzer non waste gate turbo ex 4BD1. and the Garrett GT2052 that i am currently running. You can see where this is going yeh.

    Thanks justin
