4BD1 exh manifold and LT85 questions.

    Morning 4BD1 people.

Can anyone of the "reliable information" people on this forum answer me a couple of specific 4BD1 engines and gearbox configuration questions.
    1. Is the LT85 gearbox as bad behind a 4BD1 as some people suggest? (maybe the question should be: "Would anyone fit a 4BD1 coupled to it's original LT85 to another Land Rover model?")
    2. Is there any 4BD1 exhaust manifold that doesn't direct the exhaust pipe out into the LHS mudguard that will still fit a LR chassis?

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

    LT85 Bad?

Well, I have a 120" with an LT85 behind the 4bd1 and its just shown up with spline wear at 188000 km!

So, no, in standard form and driven well will last a while. Add a turbo but!!!!

    Hi Diana,

    1. IMHE, the LT85 is quite OK (at 300000km), but then I do not drive too aggressively, nor do I tow anything heavier than a box trailer.

I rarely change up to 5th under 75kph, which means around town it doesn't get out of 4th gear. And I change down when required before it is too loaded.

There is no need to rev/slip the clutch when starting, just gently let it out from the idle and then accelerate away, after all it has a natural anti-stall quality to it.

Since Syntrans has been available I have used it. This has not only smoothed everything, but I hope will extend the life of the LT85.

If you haven't already, you may be interested to read Dave Ashcroft's site re the LT85.

    2. No idea - sorry

    regards - Laurie

My LT85 fitted Isuzu appears to be an original fitment (ie not removed & repaired) & it collapsed the front bearings at 340,000klm which is when I bought it. The mainshaft into the transfer is about half worn out.
I replaced it with an LT95.
Its not turboed & I would say mostly country klms.

I can't comment on the LT85, not having used one.

There is insufficient room for an exhaust pipe between the starter and the chassis, but it is probably just possible to run one in front of the starter and behind the axle if you can find a centre exit manifold - but you certainly could not tun a winged sump, and it would have to be fairly low below the slave cylinder.

    1) if you drive sensibly an lt85 will behave just fine. up the idle speed to 900-950 and the 4bd1 wont shake the hell out of the bearings. use syntrans in it and it turns it into a very usable box. i swapped mine out because of the gearing and tyre sizes i am running and what i use it for....

    2) my 4bd1-t exhaust runs inside the chassis will take a pic or two for you if you want.

driven sensibley a known good 85 is ok

yes there is room to reroute the exhaust inside the chassis but I dont reccomend it.

the turbo bloke that fitted my turbo routed the exhaust inside the chassis in front of the starter motor. My wife complains about the heat under the passenger side floor so will probably re-route out through the inner guard as per factory spec. I would think the Perentie 6x6s with the wider chassis probably routed the exhaust inside the chassis.

    Diana,

I have no doubt they are a great trans behind a NA motor, as it has not enough power to push it in 5th gear all day, which IMHO is the LT85's weakness. They have a nice low first and reverse gear, something the LT95 doesen't . The other issue that plagued SOME of the 110's etc was poor bellhousing alignment when the castings and machining was done there were some poor quality control resulting in anywhere up to a .050" misalignment of the input shaft causing early front bearing collapse. My uncles 1988 110 (Where my 4BD1 came from ) had 2 attempts to correct this issue and eventually was re-dowelled and lasted a further 300K without an issue. It was always behind a NA engine and was a rare (Apparently?) 1.2:1 LT230 fitment also. He ran 8.25/16's to up the gearing for a time.

I have seen thes transmissions behind a turbo engine fail earlier in 5th gear than I would like to see, basically the engine is a torque monster turboed and can be driven all day in 5th towing a trailer etc and is simply too much for it.

I picked an LT95 for this reason.

Manifold, can't help you there BUT I have seen a set of extractors made for a 110 that improved the performance a little, perhaps a custom set can be made at a reasonable cost?

    Hope this helps
