Home again - with a problem

Drove home from Melbourne today, about 950km.

Unfortunately the alternator stopped working about West Wyalong. I have no idea what the problem is, since it was nearly dark when I got home, and anyway I could see little point in burning fingers - wait until it is cold. It may be more mouse havoc, but could be the alternator - it has done over 300,000km.

I could be interested in sources of supply for alternators and prices (if this turns out to be the problem. I have little interest in increasing size.

Apart from this, no problems, although I seem to have a bit of vibration I suspect is the front prop shaft, although it got new U-joints not too long ago.

First time for several years i have come up the Newell. A few new bits, but not really much change, except the surface is deteriorating in a lot of places.

On flea bay motors there are a few places in the US selling new alts 12v 70A for 4BD1's for US$170.
I emailed my alt number but he replyed that he didnt have a replacment for that number
I have been meaning to ask him what the differnce is between his and mine.
Mine is a 1981 40A. I cant see the mounts changing to much
You could try him with your alt number, it might be different to mine.

I have been meaning to upgrade my alt for a while. The old alt works well, can't be worth much, I am sure we can work out a deal.

    John,
Theres a fair chance it is just the brushes worn out with those k's. Has the light been flickering at all - usually the dash light illuminates a number of times before the brushes stop contacting. You have to pull it down to check the brushes but it sounds like you are going to have to do that anyhow. If it is the 70W one I have a couple of spare sets of them here - if you can solder it is a relatively easy job. I guess you are probably not able to obtain them out where you live, pm me if you need brushes and I will post a set to you on Monday. They come in a pack of 10 from Ashcrofts and are cheap..Brian

John, it could just be the voltage regulator. I think I'm correct in saying this is separate to the alternator on the Isuzu's.

as preventative maintenance,I had my alt (& vac pump) rebuilt by a local auto electrician before a trip into central oz 6 years ago.... (the cost seemed very reasonable from memory)

Thanks for the offer - I'll have to see what the problem is first (and which alternator it is). The light did not flicker, just came on. I stopped to make sure it wasn't the fan belt - would have helped if it was, as I carry one. Should be able to confirm whether it is the brushes without removing it - as it has an external regulator, disconnecting the field terminal and checking the resistance to earth should show whether they are OK. Probably won't get to it today.

Yes, and it could be mouse chewed wires, too - I'll have to check.

If it turns out to be the alternator I'll get back to you. In any case I could be interested in it for a spare, so will look at any suggestions anyway, although if it is not the alternator, there will be no rush.

US spec engines have twin belts driving the alternator. My JDM engine has a single. What do you have?
This difference alone would mean a different part number, but I don't see it as a show-stopper.
