    lets play pick that noise

    welcome to my nightmare

    can you pick the problem?

sound file attached is what i get to hear when engine temp gauge reads 80 deg cel in third gear reving up then backing off.

i have bad industrial deafness so my descrption may suck...

to me it is a loud tap somewhat like a valve bounce but way too loud for that imho

it is not too bad under 1600 rpm and under 80 deg on my temp gauge.

soon as temp gauge goes over 80 deg the noise really begins to make it presence felt.

over 80deg if you are nursing it at around 1700-1800 rpm it is bearable tho present UNTIL you back off then it gets louder and if you need more loud pedal it really taps. if you let the motor ease and settle it will take about 30-50 seconds and quieten down till next time.

the attached file is the noise it makes right on 80 deg in third gear

i hope to get an above 80 deg capture next day or so...

sounds was captured on my iphone....

    Dave,

it sounds really unpleasant. Are you pretty certain there was no excessive crankshaft endfloat last time you checked?

Sounds like a possible gudgeon pin area noise This can be caused by excessive crank end float, or simply gudgeon pin/ bush failure.

Either way thats all I can think of at present, sorry.

it sounds bad man, pull the sump off and check big end clearance as well as crank end float as JC as sugested allthough you don't need the sump off to specificaly check that.

Doesn't sound very nice. Maybe take an oil sample and see what it shows up in terms of metals. Only costs $20 or so.

    Sound

Hard to pick but it definately sounds like piston or valve areas by the speed of the noise ( If that makes sense). How about a wild stab in the dark and suggest the water pump????? Might be time for a stethoscope.

    Good luck, Justin

given its temperature dependant Im thinking along the lines of it being piston/sleeve related.

    Send ya pm.

Its not something simple like twig hitting the fan? Other options are has someone adjusted your tappets, they might be badly out. Last dumb suggestion is something in turbo compressor turbine - like a bit of the filter. I shouldn't happen but you never know or the water pump bearing. My water pump is about to die. Unless you have a sealed bearing try giving it a grease.

None are temperature related I know.

I could only take a random stab in the dark, which wouldn't be very helpful. Having said that, I always try to eliminate the simplest/easiest to fix things first (this is after years of pulling cars apart only to find out that something like a fuse has blown).

When the engine heats up so do most other things, so the noise could be any number of things. Like rar110 said, I'd check for anything foreign stuck anywhere around the motor. I'd also have a look inside the air filter box, as it's right up against the firewall and anything in it would go straight through to the cab. I'd also have a good look at the exhaust manifold and gaskets, as well as anything that might be pulsing around the turbo.

I once had a noise that was very similar - it was a bit of wire that had got caught on a propshaft. I hope yours is something equally easy fix once you've found it.
