    What the heck is this!

The things one finds in ones gear box oil.... Did a 10k service, or there abouts, the spedo hasn't worked for a long time, second belly full of oil since the rebuild by Silastic and Son. Oil looked great, it had all sorts of colours through it, there were gold bits, silver bits, and the oil itself was a lovely chocolate colour. I think most of the first gear syncro ring set was in the oil, but the thing that I cannot place is this broken pin thing that looks terribly like it should still be in the box, attached to something bigger and doing an important job.

The Rattler still soldiers on, but I expect it will pick an appropriately inconvenient time to throw the towel in. The box sounds OK, by that I mean I can still mostly hear the radio at 90kmh as per usual, and apart from the first gear syncros not being great, it works fine. I wonder, however, for how long.

That is the remains of a roll pin. From memory the only roll pins in an LT95 box are on the selector shafts but that one looks a bit too large in diameter to be one of these. Check the diameter if it is 5mm then it's part of one of these. If not maybe it's a foreigner that someone dropped in by accident while they were assembling the box. ...........Brian

Its a solid pin rather than a roll pin, it would be about 5mm but will need to check. Also need to check if its magnetic. Hopefully that is what it is, but with the oil having the appearance of a lovely dark brown metallic paint rather than 10,000km gear oil, I'd reckon I still have problems.

I'm tempted to give it a dose of Slick 50 and see how long I can get out of it, but that might just be wasting another $80. Slick 50 is good, but it doesn't do miracles.....

    Thanks heaps for the tips,

    Dan

Checked the broken pin, it is not magnetic. Any other sugestions other than it being a foreign body?

It appears to be case hardened, or at least plated. The score marks on it seem to be from it being forced at some stage but the end I have shows no sign of being hammered.

    Got me...

the only thing I can think of is a bearing roller but the only one that that could have come from would have chewed out other things on its way out and killed the box.

unless it was left in the box during a rebuild or is part of a bodgied drift that snapped off when some hamfisted mechanic was giving it the beans Im out of ideas.

    urmmm Strip the box?

My guess is that it is the end of a punch that was possibly used to remove the selector roll pins when it was overhauled and the end broke off in the selector and was dislodged when the new roll pin was reinstalled. No other ideas i'm afraid. Definitely looks like a foreigner to the box.......Brian

Thanks for the input. In some ways it would have been better to know that pin was part of the thing that holds everthing together and it will all go badly pear shaped if I don't rebuild it now. As it is I know its dodgey, but just how dodgey is the question... Broken foreign object, was that the only one? Now I'm imagining every shudder, whine and vibe to be signaling the start of a rapid and unco-ordinated disassembly of everything between the gear stick and the drain plug.

I'd say we'll have to park up shortly and swap boxes again so I can see what is going on inside this one. Wasn't planning on that, but I'd hate to have it go 'Bang' and ruin the good parts too.

    Thanks again......
