I'm not a fan of top mount I/C's, IMO a front mount works better at low speeds and a water/air type is better again at low/crawling speeds.

Add to that, IMO the 110/130 engine bay vents its underbonnet air poorly and a top mount just adds to the problem.

I really need to get a pressure differential gauge and test that theory.

As Steve/roverrescue keeps saying, I'll be running around in a Tdi powered Deefer for years to come....
I wouldn't write them off yet Rick. Don't seem louder than a Tdi. As for power and fuel consumption, you won't find anything as economical as your existing engine... (but do you always want to go that slow!)

There must be someone local with one of these who can give you a test drive?

Considering how much fuel I'm dumping through mine at idle and full load, it blows me away how little fuel I actually use overall

For all its faults, a Tdi is bloody efficient.

If Land Rover had a bit more money for development and had've released a 3 litre version, I doubt most of us would go looking for an alternative.

More likely be a Rodeo around with the 4JH1, not too many small pantechs around here Ben.

Yes the Tdi is efficient. I get about 8L/100 in the disco!!! (300tdi manual).

However a lot of that is down to the fact it is small and gutless... The isuzu (4BD1) has a better BSFC AFAIK.

I think a 3L or 3.5L version of the TD5 (but with manual injection) would have been the ideal LR engine.

Are there any BSFC figures for the 200/300tdi?

The 4BD1T isn't amazing at best point, easily beaten by the likes of VW's 1.9tdi. But compare rated power to rated power and the Isuzu wins.

Don't bother. It's indirect injection and the head can't take any power increase.
You could convert one to direct injection. But it's easier to start with a Di engine and save the hassle.

What Dougal said. The 2 is the giveaway that it is indirect injection - I think the only exception to that was the 4BA1 - also IDI.

Why do you guys believe an intercooler of any position on an Isuzu in a Land Rover makes a huge difference at low speed. Off road or low speed it's Torque doing the work.

I would worry about it in say a drift car etc. Not a fruit truck with a transfer case .

The direct injection 4BC2 is the other exception.
