    Maxi/MR Automotive -49% low gears

    Hi,

I am guessing these are straight cut ?

are they easy enough to fit ?

most importantly, how noisy are they compared to stock ?

    many thank's

Yes the gears are straight cut.

The 49% gears require a bit of grinding of the case. The 30% gears do not

The 49% gears sound as noisey as my LT230 with gears that are not quite meshed properly ie They howl like a banshee.

Oh yeah, hurry up with the underdrives I am feeling the need for another

I put a 30% under gear set in my old LT230, before the 40% sets were available and you most certainly do need to grind the case, and the selector shaft. It said so in the written instructions and was in fact the case.

However I do not know if Mal may have changed the gears later. From the Maxi-drive documents in the files section here, the final reduction gear sets are:
20 teeth x 55 teeth for the 30% gear set
24 teeth x 71 teeth for the 40% gear set

Obviously smaller teeth for the 40% gears.

I don't have anything on the 49% gear set.

John, Im not 100% but I dont think there ever was a 40% reduction set. Just the 30% first and then MD added the 49%.

Ill see what I can dig up.

Dave, do you want me to make a sound recording and email it to you?

    cheers

The 30% gears required minimal grinding of the case and slight mod of the selector shaft and also a mod of the drain plug,to stop from hitting the gears. These mods could easily be done with minimal material requiring to be removed.

I think you are correct,as I remember Mal saying that it wasn't really viable, due to the material that would have to be removed, due to the gear size.
But I do remember there being talk of it being available by special request. Not sure how true it was though?

Do these things still get sold?

I could be wrong, but I'm sure when Tusker on here had his 49% gears fitted that a shaft had to be sent to Maxidrive for machining. Or.... am I talking rubbish.
    Cheers

Yes, M R Automotive make them, Barry from Hi-Tough Engineering does some of the machine work on them. I think it may be an exchange thing??? not sure though....

Dave, forgive me if I am wrong, but isn't MR/MAXI your competitor?
Not quite kosher doing market research on their products through the forum, I would have thought
I am, of course, open to being corrected.
    Cheers, Dave.

Dave has hit the nail on the head, well the second Dave anyway.

Dave Ashtrans is Dave from Ashcroft Transmissions, a long time member of the forum and very helpful with any information he can provide. So personally I don't think it's out of order for us to help him out with readily available information. He's not asking for material specs or engineering drawings after all.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
