No we have a 1995 disco--8.5 liters per 100Kilometers, 2 1/2 inch body lift, aluminium racks, Detroit locker, and we do not bounce our brains or our sore backs with its great ride. And it cost us only $4000--. Pictures of it are on AULRO under posts by previous owner.
However we did blow out the plastic plug on to of the thermostat and it overheated. that cost $3000 to be fixed by a Land Rover mechanic--we cold have purchased a second hand motor cheaper but decided to get this one rebuilt.
But if you replace all the Radiator/heater hoses, and put in brass plugs this will not happen. Or put in a low water alarm--we are going to put one in, and they should not give a problem. If you buy a 300TDI do be sure it has less than 320 thousand though-- these have bearings go at around 350,000 KM, but apparently are an easy rebuild if not damaged. Oh, and timing belt needs to be done at around every 50,000, so check if it has been done. V8s are very cheap but are also very thirsty.
