I remember the Kittyhawk incident well. They came to Singapore after it happened, the African Americans tried to stir up trouble against white sailors in Sambawang, unfortunately for them a NZ frigate was in port, and when the African Americans tried to get the Maori sailors to join them against white Kiwi's and Aussies, the Maori's turned on them. Problem solved, the Americans limped back to their ship, not to be seen again. Those white hot heads amongst the Kiwi's and Aussies were told in no uncertain terms to stay out of it, let the Maori sort it out. And we did, and watched as they did. Ahhh, the good old days, I think.

The more I remember, I think the ship involved with the Sambawang incident was not the Kitty hawk, but another Carrier, visiting on R & R. Racial tension was rife, across the US fleet. There were reports of stabbings, riots and mayhem. An interesting time for a boy from the bush.
