    Pullers

    I'm currently pondering pullers, as the ones I have always seem to be a PITA whenever I use them.
    What pullers do you use most on your Landies, and which ones would you definitely replace if all your tools were stolen?

    I've got:
    • a screw thread type 3 leg puller (the ones with the floppy internal/external legs)
    • a heavy duty pitman arm puller (only used once)
    • a chinese knockoff of good Sykes Pickavant style larger 2/3 arm set with T-bar hydraulic cylinder (pity its just a screw thread inside ). Does have a good bearing separator though!
    • a multipurpose harmonic balancer puller
    • a couple of home made bits and pieces that I've made up for particular jobs (eg steering wheel puller)


    The pitman arm puller is brilliant, but I may not ever need to use it again. Apart from the bearing separator everything else is so-so. If it all disappeared overnight I'd be looking at better options.
    I like the idea of a modular puller with different arms, decent power head (screw thread, screw type hydraulic cylinder, or porta-power driven etc) but would want to know it worked well before laying down those kind of $$$.

    Interested to hear what you have and what is most useful.

    Used them both a few times, but none of those times were they a "perfect fit" for the job. As you say, they were a PITA to fit each time. Always needed various extra bits and pieces to make them work. As an example, this is how I make them "work".





    I've wondered what other people do as well Steve, as I can't see the above approach working every time and forking out a few hundred for a good kit seems pretty steep.

    Good work there - so that's how you're meant to get that stub axle bearing out.
    Pretty sure when I did mine it got the tappety-tap with a long curved drift from the other side.

    That harmonic balancer puller looks the same as mine (maybe supercrap??).
    Looks like its had the same amount of use too......Not much.

    Land Rover say you need a special tool. I reckon mine looks pretty special.

    Yeah the harmonic balancer puller was supercrap or similar. I just found that pic online... I have used it at least once to get the TDI crank pulley off when I did the timing belt. Just needed some additional bolts to fit the threads on the pulley and it did the trick.

    I bought this one from Trade Tools:
    TradeTools - 66622-FORCE HYDRAULIC GEAR PULLER SET

    Works a treat... couldn't have done the gearbox rebuild without it. The silver collar piece was also useful in conjunction with some of the extension arms and the shop press to put a lot of the bearings/races in...

    That's pretty much like my crappy set - except sounds like yours works.

    How much grunt has the hydraulic bit got - I've seen that style quoted between 8-12T. How does it compare with your shop press for power?
    I've got a 6T press so have a good feel for what that's like as a comparison.

    The shop press was borrowed, advertised as a 10T, but I'm not too confident on how they rate them.

    The puller did everything on the gearbox except the mainshaft collar, which was "incredibly" tight. For that, we actually used the press working on the other components of the puller set.

    I had my mate, who weights considerably more than I do, nearly hanging off the handle of the press, to put enough pressure to remove that particular piece. It were tight...

    So I would guess that it's got a bit less than a generic 10T press, but probably not too much less.

    Steve i thought you would have out grown that behaviour by now








    I have much the same as you as well as a 12 tonne press and some home brew contraptions tho the best is the old axle with a threaded bar welded to its spline end to take different home brew attachments and the lump of heavy tube that slips over it to form the mother of all slide hammers/puller

    Guess someone had to say it

    Good idea for the slide hammer. I've got an old Vitara front axle that would be perfect for that

    Could use a rover axle Steve, but it would probably break.
