I already manufacture a wireless breakaway battery monitor ( Australia's first ) for a large wholesaler and I'm in the process of developing a far more comprehensive system.

I have looked at developing a system around using smart phones and tablets as the in-cab display but I have no hope of developing the apps.

The device shown here is a great idea but not really suited to automotive use beyond voltage monitoring.

You need something that can monitor a few hundred amps, not 10 amps, and so developing our own could be beneficial in that we could develop a system for a wider customer base.

Again, this is just a suggestion.
I'd definitely be interested in something along these lines. Unfortunately I don't have any skills in either IT or electronics, so not much help there. But if I can assist in any other way, would be happy to.
    Cheers .........

OK folks, I'll see how much interest there is in developing a system here on the forum, and if we can get some people with the know-how involved then why not.

I already have a fair range of deferent types of basic monitors developed, like volts, amps, temp and similar, but if anyone has additional requirements for other types of monitors, post them up.

I can also transmit the basic data but we would need to transmit far more data to make the project more flexible.

I'm pretty happy with my Madman EMS 2 Unit (MadMan - MadMan EMS2 Unit), but often wondered how much work is involved in being able to record all the values for a given period of time, and review those.

Ultimately, what I think would be good - especially for those vehicles without a CPU - would be to ability to monitor anything valuable, such as temps, revs, volts, amps, running hours. Whilst it would be nice to be able to see these in a chart real-time (perhaps on a smart phone or tablet), even simply having the ability to export the data to allow an analyst like me to crunch the data to glean some sort of intelligence would be cool.

Include in that a GPS that monitors locations and speeds, and plenty of people who loan their cars would surely be interested! Include a sim card and the ability to email alerts, and your talking about the same functionality used in industry, but perhaps a lower price-point accessible to the home user. This could be gained from cheap Android phones fixed to the vehicle with password functionality. Similar functionality already exists to a degree with the Torque app, but alas it's only good for vehicles with a CPU.

By all means get a Defender. If you get a good one, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.

Even though I've bought one of the Mooshi units, I'm interested.

Two of the applications I have for the monitor is to record just how often and for how long:
    (1) the EAS compressor runs
    (2) the ABS pump runs

I'd be interested in battery voltage to tell me if the alternator is failing.

The original idea was to have a way to monitor battery stats in a trailer, or caravan.

Whilst it would be great to be able to monitor other things as well, I think we need to be careful about moving too far away from the original plan.
