Workzone Planer Thicknesser replacement blades - see Ryobi

    Hello All,

If anyone bought an Aldi Workzone Titanium Planer Thicknesser MB1931A mine was originally fitted with a 319 mm x 18.2 mm x 3.2 mm HSS 18% planer blade. Single bevel or sharpened edge

Ryobi 318 mm planer blades that are advertised as for use with most 318 mm Planers purchased from Bunnings fits the Workzone planer. These are two sided sharpened blades.

There are also other brands available online that do produce a 319 mm blade.

    Kind regards
    Lionel

    Hello All,

The blades are accessed by unbolting the four allen bolts that secure the chip extraction chute.

A series of eight or so 8 mm bolts are undone to loosen the blade holder bar. There are two springs that locate the height of the blades. The springs can fall out and one can disappear - very easily. Ask me how I know this!

The eight or so bolts operate as pinch bolts against the blade roller frame rail. There are no dowel pins to locate the blade so replacement blades do not need to have holes in them. Hole or zero hole blades each fit okay.

    Kind regards
    Lionel

    Diabolical things they are!

We have a really old bugga of a machine at the shed, I reckon even older than most folks on here, with a screw adjuster that love to chew fingers up at a rate of knots to boot.

Anyhow, I was tasked with getting it back up and running, which needed a fair bit of work. Stupid thing has Whitworth type fixtures, and of course we have exactly zero Whitworth tools at the shed.
So next best thing ... maybe the 14mm open ender.
I thought I had the blades all done up right, and I reckon I got a score of two out of three ... generally I'd be happy with such a reasonable score. 66.6667% score is fine for a Mr Average such as myself.

    BUT! not in planer/thicknesser land.
One of the blades tried to land on the moon, I at least had the foresight to test it with the top down. Extremely sturdy cast iron stuff. Blade bounced around madly for a sec and snapped a couple of important cast iron doodads and thingamejigs.

And it was only then that I understood that a 100% success rate is required, and that 66.66667% = FAIL!
    Arthur.

All these discos are giving me a heart attack!

    Hello All,

Well, the things one can find on the internet, especially on YouTube! I found this clip which has a title that matched my own question exactly ....Will Ryobi blades work in an Aldi thicknesser? As per the owner of this YouTube channel, Brian Hartigan describes himself as "Big Irish Git" confirmed.

It is a shame that I did not find Brian's YouTube clip a couple of weekends ago when I experimented and found out the Ryobi blades did fit the Workzone planer. Accessed 3rd of December 2025 from, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uRe3SCSnJ40 . Of course there is warning about the tensioner springs - how one should be careful not to lose them... sigh!!!

There is also a Ryobi Youtube clip that features a text block showing a written caution about not rotating the cutter drum while the blade is out - because the two tensioner springs per blade could fall out... They did not mention how a spring can disappear into the void - and never be seen again. https://youtu.be/_likmjXM1tY

What I have also learnt is that apart from the on/off switch and a different colour scheme, there are multiple suppliers of the planer thicknessers from some generic factory. A red coat of paint makes it a Workzone thicknesser, a green coat of paint makes it a Ryobi product. There are about three additional companies who direct the manufacturer what colour paint and stickers to put on their version of the machine.

All this knowledge and insight - especially the Youtube clips, would have been really handy to find out about before I worked on my thicknesser!

I did contact Aldi months ago - customer service there is a bit like one episode of Doctor Who that made the statement about "military intelligence". Both are examples of oxymorons!

Yes, I have contacted Ryobi about my getting a replacement spring for my, umm ... 'Ryobi' thicknesser.

    Kind regards
    Lionel
