    box trailer project

Here is my trailer I got from a client, he was going to tow it to the tip and leave it there.
Pulled the chassis off and found it rotten totally.

Cut all the welds so the deck was totally free and fell away so i could cut the bottom 50mm off the side boards.

The sides all cut look good so sprayed with gal spray to seal it. Started on the chassis with galv 50mm box 2mm wall, should resist rust a lot better.
Trial on the body and it fits, fading light so thats all for now.

This was a nathan trailer and i think it was a poor design, where the front panel met the chassis it was not welded to the chassis with the 50 x 50 corner box section but cut off level with the bottom of the side panels, How does it support itself then? only with the 1.5mm side panels ! welded to the front chassis frame.

will keep it standard, and tack weld a sacrificial strip onto the bottom to stop stuff falling out.

Are you using dipped galvanised tube or Duragal which only has a thin layer of zinc on the outside?

If it's duragal, it would be worthwhile treating inside the tubes as soon as you have all the welding done. That way it won't rust from the inside out!

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

A few more pics, finished welding the box to the chassis, and sprayed with 99% zinc spray pac, turned it over with the axle and wheels attached.
