    CARAVAN LIGHTS

I have just purchased a caravan for use away from power. I need to set it up with LED's for interior lighting. I have bought a couple of LED down lights to mount over the table.

What I need is lighting over the sink, stove and bench area. This area has overhead cupboards so I was thinking of strip led's under the cupboards. What concerns me is there are a lot of ads on eBay stating that their product is very bright.

Now having a light that is bright is one thing, but means nothing if it does not throw the light any distance. I purchased a 240v downlight a while ago. It has 80 LED's all of which are not that bright. It could have had 500 dim ones and it would still be dim.

I was thinking about something like this.

12v 100cm flexible Led light strip waterproof boat rv (eBay item 270729944344 end time 03-May-11 20:56:45 AEST) : Cars, Bikes, Boats

    Or this.
    2 x 12v 50cm 75 Led light 390mA - 4.7w 2 light deal (eBay item 230606041984 end time 16-Apr-11 17:15:18 AEST) : Cars, Bikes, Boats

Any one had experience with this sort of lighting?

    Dave.

There are numberlesss LED strips on ebay, so long as you are prepared to wait buying from Hong Kong or China means you will pay about 1/3 the price of them in Oz. I have bought a few of the 60cm versions of this strip light:

White 120cm Flexible Waterproof PVC LED Light Strip | eBay

and have been very happy with their light output as interior lights. This seller has some neat double row lights too, only 20 cm long.

Are these 180 degree lights like richard4u2 suggested? Will these really light up my bench top to appease my ageing eyesight?

I hadn't checked their angle before, but I just went and looked. Their main brightness is 75 to 90 degrees wide, but still reasonable light to 180 degrees. No sharp cutoff. A good general illumination but brightest in the middle. One of mine is curled up in a spiral under my tailgate instead of a globe lamp which lasts about one slam. I can read under it easily. The other 2 are straight, one facing forward and one back as interior lights. Excellent for directory reading.

Have a look at the marine or automotive sections.

Flux LED's will give significantly more light.
Might be a bit more cost wise than fleabay but much better quality. I've ordered quite a few for both cars now and will be fitting out the trailer with them shortly too.
And there an Australian business too!

I bought this 500mm long one to improve the lighting in my camper.

    12V 75-LED White Light Strip (50cm) - Free Shipping - DealExtreme

I wanted it to be a bit versatile. so I fitted it inside a clear acrylic tube and capped the ends to make it waterproof and rugged. I fitted the 12V power socket salvaged from an old printer to give me more options about how and where I use it.

It is very bright. Time will tell if it is as useful as I think it will be, but the signs are good so far.

What exactly is this clear acrylic tube? Is it the soft clear hose that you buy from Bunnings or is it a hard plastic? What did you use to cap the ends?

Soft tube might work, but wouldn't be as sturdy or as clear. I happened to be passing a place in Gosford where I had previously bought HDPE for another job, so I bought the really clear, hard acrylic tube. It cost me $12, which was more than the LED strip. The strip is a perfect fit inside the tube.

I capped one end with a flat piece of plastic glued on with plumber's PVC cement. I had planned to do the same with the other end, but I must have been having a senior moment when I bought the 500mm of acrylic tube because I thought the strip was only 400mm long. Consequently I had to heat form a bit of PVC conduit that I already had to create an extension about 40mm long to accommodate the socket for the power lead. The extension was a neat fit over the end and I held it on with a couple of self tapping screws.

If I had remembered when I was buying the tube that the strip was 500mm or if I had some PVC conduit big enough to slip over the end of the acrylic tube, it would have been a bit simpler and neater.

If you can't visualise what I am describing, I could probably take a couple of photos.
