    Trailer Chains

I am replacing my Orac hitch on my trailer with a Ozihitch which will mean the trailer will be about 2" further away from the car when hitched up when compared to the Orac.

With the old hitch the chains were just the correct length with minimal excess however it will be too tight with the new hitch at extreme articulation. Given the rules related to chains, can I just add an extra rated shackle on the end of each chain to lengthen it or do I need to get them replaced.

    Thanks

If the shackles a rated, I can't see there's a problem. The Hayman Reece type as supplied with many towbars, is not rated, but is considered adequate by many. I use a pair of two ton rated bow shackles.

I'd be using a pair of hammerloks to extend the chain.

Under 3.5T the chains don't have to be rated only to a specific diameter.
