need help with selecting axle and brakes

dont want to clog up doctorj's thread

due to a minor over sight i now need to fit brakes to my camper trailer

    current set up
    • custom axle to suit land rover stub and hubs
    • no brakes fitted
    modding current set up
    • i could fit discs to the hubs
    • weld a bracket onto the axle to axcept calipers
    • fit an over ride hydraulic system
    • has anybody fitted land rover hubs and brakes to a trailer
    • all sounds to hard
    new axle
    • this is where i am a little confused on what i should buy?
    • just want a simple set up?
    • electric 10"?
    • parallel bearings?
    • 120 PCD 16mm studs to suit my defer
    • oh and a controller
    what are your thoughts?

When I made my 130 tub based camper I had a custom axle made (by a mate) from 55mm dia solid round bar, each end machined to take Land Rover components - 11" 107 drum brakes with separate manual & hydraulic actuator plus Series III LR bearings and hubs. Manual brake operation used for handbrake and hydraulics operated by override coupling.

Also had LR leaf springs and LR shocks.
Have done over 50,000k's with it in tow without a problem.

I actually had two of the axles made up at the time. The second one was fitted to a basic 130 tub with tool box on drawbar

Don't believe you will generate enough pressure to drive discs off an override master cylinder. In DoctorJ's thread I suggested electric over hydraulic. But it appears you have ruled this option out based on the too hard comment.

The easiest is to go to a trailer manufacturer and get a new axle with hydraulic override and drum brakes. Next would be to get a set of lr backing plates and drums/slave cylinders to re use your current axle.

    Weeds,

your defer should have a PCD of 165mm. P38 & D2 (on) have 120 PCD IIRC

" I Don't believe you will generate enough pressure to drive discs"

-Two pot rear calipers will be fine with a 3/4 over ride master cylinder.
-The big boat trailer has triple axle 4 pot holden calipers on each wheel (thats 24 pots) all running off a 3/4 over ride. Even weighing in at near 4T you cant reverse that trailer up a 5 degree incline without the over ride engaged. It brakes beautifully for such a heavy rig.

Weeds if you do end up selling the axle let me know, freight will be a killer but Ill try to sort something out... what you have built really is the best solution for a true landy off road trailer. It has so many advantages over trailer manufacturer junk.

    thanks steve

    2 x rear calipers
    2 x disc
    1 x override master cyliner
    qty brake tube
    2 x flex hoses
    1 x t-piece
    qty other fittings

thoughest part is welding the bracket for the calipers in the right spot and square, i would probably have them machines after welding so they are square to the hub

i do like the idea of having a handbrake

still dont know how effective the braking will be

the way to do it is attach caliper to assembled hub with some hyd pressure.
Bolt your caliper bracket to caliper and align on axle.
(use a caliper bracket that picks up at least two faces of your axle and is 10mm ish thick)
A couple of good tacks on both faces of caliper bracket

Remove the bolted bits, perhaps in your setup just unbolt the flange bolts?
    Burn it in

I doubt you would need to face the axle again?

The braking will be over ride but will pull up a tonne without blinking
