    mechanical drum brakes

    hi all,
    recently i have replaced the backing plates on the brakes, one side is all a ok, the drivers side has me stumped.
    the hub goes on tight, the brake pads are rubbing but they are backed off as much as possible, causing the drum/hub to get very hot.
    does this sound familar for new pads and my thinking is they well wear down eventually and stop the heat issues.
    interested any thoughts.

    Doesn't sound right to me.
    If you only changed the backing plate it should all go back together the same way.
    If you have new linings also it is posible there is to much meat on the lining.
    Is there a lip on the drum? It may be draging on the extreme edge of the linings.
    Have a look and see if the shoes are tight on the backing plate.
    Aslo check the adjusters are located properly onto the shoe.

    Another possible step to solving your problem would be to have the shoes/linings radius ground to match the drums.
    I used to do this on numerous Series Landys I did brake jobs on and it was amazing the difference it made to fitting and effective braking.

    Did you get oversized shoes?

    Sometimes you can file down the high spots on the friction material using a wood rasp or similar like a surform used in surfboard manufacture.

    On new Land Rover brake shoes it is often the bottom of the shoe that needs shaving when they bind.

    You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

    i may have figured this out, and if i do confirm my suspicions i wont be happy.
    so i bought these here
    and you can see the pad lining is even on both sides of the backing plate.

    when looking at alko website the should be offset like here

    they are catching on the top front leading edge, a run up the highway on the weekend will hopefully wear them down sufficiently to not be an issue?.

    It seems that as delivered "out-of-the-box", the shoes have been assembled wrongly on the backing plates for your needs.

    From what I can make out from the ebay photos, the shoes have been arranged symetrically on the backing plate. One shoe needs to be inverted so that you get a leading and trailing edge as required

    Simply remove the front (leading) shoe on each wheel and invert it, replace and adjust. Then your setup will look like the Alko diagram.
