It seems that as delivered "out-of-the-box", the shoes have been assembled wrongly on the backing plates for your needs.
From what I can make out from the ebay photos, the shoes have been arranged symetrically on the backing plate. One shoe needs to be inverted so that you get a leading and trailing edge as required
Simply remove the front (leading) shoe on each wheel and invert it, replace and adjust. Then your setup will look like the Alko diagram.
