    Braked trailer.......is a handbrake required

It appears not........I cannot recall seeing a braked trailer without a handbrake

    Technical Requirements

Vehicle Standard (Australian Design Rule 38/02 - Trailer Brake Systems) 2005

Hear I was thinking I needed a mechanical handbrake to get a safety certificate for my trailer that had a hydraulic handbrake..........

A few will question what happens if there is a hydraulic leak.......I guess the same could be asked what's happens if a handbrake cable fails.......same result I guess

I very much doubt I will ever have a runaway camper......I have wheels choc's, a jockey wheel that doesn't roll, stabiliser legs......and my trusty hydraulic brake. So apart from my garage and the campsite it's rare the trailer would be unhitched between.

    Hope that helps others.

I am not entirely sure I understand what your post is about.

What I will say is that there have been a couple of times when manouvring the trailer unhitched when even a slight slope gets a bit of momentum up that I have been very glad of the handbrake. It is pretty hard to stop a 1 tonne camper by hand when it gets going.

Is it a legal requirement for a trailer fitted with brakes to have a mechanical (cable operated) hand brake?

are you sure its a legal requirement?

one of the links above says the manufacturer should consider a handbrake, doesn't mention must have handbrake......the other link I don't really follow

I do have a hydraulic handbrake fitted....identical to what Kimberly Kampers have fitted.

my question is based around the case that I am not allowed to have a hydraulic handbrake

For the NSW people , yes to the handbrake. As for the foreigners why don't you contact the motor registry for valid confirmation.
