Off Road Caravan or Hybrid recommendations

    Hi All,

I am toying with the idea of upgrading the camper trailer. But still want to do Victorian High Country trips.

Looking at a true off road so:
    Good ground clearance
    Good departure angle
    Under 1000kg loaded
    Pop Top?
    Minimal Canvas
Can sleep in it without setup if need be
    Water, battery and solar

    Looked at
TVAN - Small heavy & expensive Yulara - Expensive
Avan Weekender Adventure - Small, looks ok, poor departure
Avan Sportliner - not off road
Goldstream Mini Off Road - too heavy
Bushranger Joey - poor departure angle
Coromal Compac 401 Off Road - poor departure angle
MDC Xt-10 - Heavy and just got heavier..
    Lifestyle AT-10 - heavy
    Vista RV Crossover - heavy
    UAV 440 - heavy
Jurgens ORYX, Xscape, Xpedition - Heavy, top heavy (ORYX) Low clearance - but do have skid bars??

I am thinking it is an impossible task, can anyone recommend and I have missed?

My Cub is a good compromise but lots of canvas and have to set up to sleep.

    Have you checked out. http://zonerv.com.au

You could build your own to your specs. That way you can control the total weight.

Thought the Tvan came in under 1000kg? Aliens does. Enough room for 2 and easy to set up. They do hold their value well though and even older ones will set you back a bit.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

They look very impressive. Look they are pretty new as there are not many examples on their site yet.

Might have to have a think...

Tvans do come in just under 1000KG (890 to 990kg) empty and then cargo over 500Kg so 1500 + Kg on the road/track.

For what you get (room) they seem expensive I think. I have read they are not real good for people with mobility problems and I have a bad back so might be a problem. Pity because they were on the first wish list before the CUB.

Weight limit is your issue IMHO. Even with our Trak Shak we are 1.5 ton loaded. A hard top crossover would be the same or higher - especially when you are talking loaded ready to go.

We've been talking for a while now of getting one of the UEV (Conqueror) models when the kids grow up and start heading out the door. Figured it'd be a good compromise for what we want.

The UEV 440 is 1.1 ton unloaded, and can be up to 1.8 ton all up - you could keep that last figure lower dependant on what you take. IMHO that's not a bad figure to be towing.

A mate of mine has had at Tvan for a few years now and us happy with it. Has taken it on a few long trips including central Australia deserts. Thought would mention as he is disabled with back problems and has to have the tow vehicle controls modified so can drive.
