Probably your best bet with seven,,
and just so you all know,, free camping means just that,, free.
staying on a patch of dirt inside a caravan park is not.
however-- with 7, a caravan park will be a nightly occurrence for you.
No caravan/mobile home I have ever heard of can shower and toilet 7.
I wonder what the regs are for driving a motorhome with 7?

All the Motor Homes we have looked at only have seat belts for 6.
SWMBO & I had a long chat about the holiday last night.
We have decided that when I'm home next week we will drag out a map, decide exactly where we are going & for how long we want to stay, then 2 alternate routes between the places we want to go. Then we will work out that about 600km a day if there are towns that might have reasonably priced accommodation for us all.
If we can work it that way we will not need a van which has worked out much more expensive than I thought it would be.
I still like the idea of a van but it will not work out much cheaper than hiring cabins at caravan parks + extra fuel + extra wear on the car + things like brake controllers etc, etc.
I have suggested to SWMBO that we could just shoot a couple of the kids, they probably deserve it, but she didn't think that would be socially acceptable.
Anyway, I hope we will have a plan by the time I'm back at work, at least we have left ourselves over 12 months to get things sorted.
Thank-you all for the advice & if you have any more good ideas please let me know.

You mentioned having camping gear.
I would take a trailer and the camping gear and mix camping and staying in chalets.
Worth the thought, plus having a trailer frees up a bit of precious room in the car.

Caravan park cabins don't work out too cheap due to many of them now being set up as 'resorts' with play grounds, pools, games rooms etc - which may be good with your tribe.
However, I'd also look at (google) self contained accommodation. We recently toured Tassie for a month with another couple using SCA's and found that it worked out pretty reasonable with considerably more room than park cabins and often had use of bikes or kayaks etc.

As previously mentioned if you have camping gear mix camping and accommodation a few nights of free bush camping along the way could add to the adventure for the kids. Some of our best nights camping have been when we have found somewhere just off the road with no-one else around.

If you tow a trailer with camping gear I am sure someone in Melbourne on this forum could store it for you whilst you go to Tasmania to save on the ferry cost. When in Tasmania look at renting a cottage somewhere central for a whole week. The place is quite small and you can then do day trips and go back to the same place each evening.
