Qld'rs caravanning in Tassie.
Sorry guys,
Any folk from FNQ, not used to caravanning, undertaking a van trip down to Tassie in the winter are going to get several big shocks.
The cost of powered sites has gone up, cabin rental has gone up too. It is now possible to find motel rooms cheaper.
In Tassie it is difficult to find quiet areas to pull off with a van. Most councils prohibit overnight parking in other than recognized camping areas and caravan parks.
One C.P. in Hobart's northern suburbs has just closed down.
Expect daytime temperatures to hover around twelve degrees, but don't be surprised when it only gets UP to 9. Not much different to Melbourne here.
Night-time temps would likely be around six degrees, but also could be down to zero, or below. All depends on location. If up in the Central Highlands, three degrees daytime and minus eight at night is expected.
So, for a FNQ body, spending a winter in Tassie, should seek built accommodation with some good heating. A park cabin would not normally fall into this category. Also, the ability to cook a proper meal would come in handy.
Look for self-catering multi bedroom holiday apartments. Cheapest way to eat. Warmest accomm. Most space. Quickest to set-up. Cheapest on the ferry. Cheapest on the fuel.
Working the above into the mainland trip down, a towed trailer camping on the way down to Sydney would work, but from there onwards a cabin-stay scenario would be the way to go.
I live in Tassie.
I have had various caravans.
I have taken my family away in winter, in Tassie. Mainland too.
I have also done some cold weather camping. Too hard unless you are used to it. Too much chance of the family getting ill.
I hope these points help you plan your trip.
If all goes well, it could be a fun trip.

Also, little chance of getting things dry if you get a wet patch.
