Spot on. It is surprising how many people don't understand this. We get asked all the time for generators up to 100Kva on trailers. The biggest unit we can phisically do and keep the whole package under 2000Kg is a 60Kva. When we tell them this and why most say they didn't know they needed electric brakes on trailers over this and a lot say 'It's fine, I don't need brakes on the trailer as my cars brakes work fine'. - then they get the ****s when we tell them we can't help them...

On the other hand, even when you do have an electric brake controller fitted, very few trailer hire companies offer electric braked trailers.

My personal trailer has tandem electric brakes, but it is designed for Series Landies and to fit in my side drive. When I recently had to bring a Defender from Brissy to Sydney finding a suitable trailer was a nightmare.

I found one on the Central Coast NSW, but that would have meant driving up to the Central Coast back to Cambelltown to pick up a Series 1 80" driving back through the Central Coast to Brissy and then repeating the exercise on the return journey probably adding an additional two days to the trip.

As it was I broke the law and used the Booger's 2000kg override braked trailer, then did most of the trips at night. :BigCry: AFAIK Geoff's trailer is only 500kg tare, its very light to push around, so a Defender without transmission would probably only put me over the limit by a couple of hundred kg, still not ideal. I have offered to pay Geoff for electric braking on one axle if he does the other axle and upgrades the GTM of the trailer.

I've asked in the past.... The local hire trailers about about 1200kg empty. Full chequer plate floors, guards, tiedowns, long ramps, two spares, winch .... easy 1.2tons.

this leaves you the allowable capacity of 800kgs ................... So you can legally carry...... um..... er ........ Possibly a Fiat 500 and Citroen 2cv :wasntme:

Over built. That is because people put Landcruisers on them.
That's why I bought my own trailer.

Ours was designed to carry Land Rovers. From memory it weighs 850kg, dual axel and braked with a breakaway should the trailer come adrift, can carry GVM 3000kg. We built it ourselves:)

That's a bloody ripper .... As for price. I worked out years ago is ALWAYS cheaper to buy one than make yourself if you must buy all the bits. A car trailer imported from china will probably cost 50% of buying just the metal to build one here :(

How does that tow behind your cars when loaded? I went right off the idea of tilt trailers after I hired one from the local petrol station a few times about 10years ago. It NEVER felt stable behind my car, it always felt like it was twisting and squirreling behind me. Even tilted with the short ramps I found it impossible to load. You know, I reckon that particular trailer was just a crap trailer.... the axles probably weren't aligned correctly which is why it felt so bad behind you.... the ramps simply should have been much longer.

It's interesting the way we build what suites only our own purposes. I found a monster sized coolroom a few years back cheaply. dragged it upto my sister inlaws and sold her the coolroom.... and dragged it off the trailer, then pulled the trailer home and made myself an "illegal" trailer. I only lend it to mates that I trust and know aren't, er, "not real smart".

I was left with a trailer that had a 10mm 100x100 angle iron frame. So it's really strong, but very flexible. The amount it flexes when you load a car is amazing. Why is it illegal? I extended the back of it quite a bit so now the axles are foward of the center of the bed. So if I let someone that's not really bright use it, they'll center the load over the bed and end up shiny side down on the side of the highway. My unique requirements are the ability to load cars that have a 124" wheelbase (so longer than a huge old chev impala), but only 1/4" of ground clearance.

I wanted load capacity, so I only added a partial floor (2nd hand walkway mesh ... that stuff that's never slippery... I have extra mesh I can lay down the middle of the trailer if I need a full floor), and had it weighed without ramps, spare, winch or anything removable fitted. So if pulled up by the police, unless weighed it appears legal. The empty weight was about 580kgs from memory. This gives me a 1400kg legal carrying capacity. which is enough for almost all pre-1990's cars ... But is only really legal if I don't have the ramps, winch and spares on the trailer :wasntme:.

I also wanted some nice very light weight ramps that were good and long and very wide ( The cars rear track is much narrower than the front) so I could get these cars on .......... Yep, 45kg each the bloody things were when done :( :censored: Moving them is bloody painful. It works perfectly though. The ramps get slung under the front to ensure the trailer can never be anything other than very nose heavy, even when empty.
