Thread: D4 Wheels on Camper

I tried it with D3 18" rims but my problem was the offset of the rim. I fitted 17" steel rims to the trailer and the car when I travel remote. I did manage to get the L/R stud pattern on a set of discs.

I gave up trying but that doesn't mean it's not possible. I don't have electric brakes only the override hyd type.

Proberly don't help your cause but that's my experience.

Doeable but not so easy.
I have modified D2 wheels to suit the D2 I had at the time.It involved machining the centres out on the trailer rims,wich made them suitable for the D2 in an emergency only.
IF you have the modern independant trailer suspension you MAY get away with using a wheel spacer so the wheel fits over the nose of the trailer hub.
There is conflicting advice as to the legality of wheel spacers on a trailer,definately illegal on vehicles.
I have kept my D4 wheels just incase I use them with spacers on the camper trailer.

I've thought about using the front bearing/hub assembly and then using the original front disks and calipers for braking with an electric/hydraulic controller. Not really a cheap way to go and would take a bit of mucking around on my setup to get right.

When we purchased a Lifestyle Camper Trailer AT12 I looked into the whole LR hub issue on the Vehicle Components Single Axial Cruise Master Coil 2500kg. It could not be done at the time for a number of reasons.

I went with the standard 6 Stud Toyota/Nissan PCD as these are very popular. I then had a second wheel carrier installed on the caravan to carry a second LR Spare Wheel.

I have no complaints with the Cruise Master setup and the second LR Spare on the caravan.

Is it a 2.7l or 3.0l D4?

I'm told the 2.7l can take a 17" rim from a BMW, which might make matching it to the trailer easier. It will also help with tyre selection and cost.

I am also keen on this idea.

We have a Jayco Dove and thought that I could at the very worst have three extra spares by setting the van up with the LR hub.

Being that it's a 5x120, the same as a Commodore, is there a 12" braked hub out there?

What would the offset normally be on a Triton/LC rim?

I attended Melbourne Caravan Show at Melbourne Showgrounds today.
We have ordered a Patriot Camper which we collect this week.
I spoke to Mark from Melbourne Trailer & Caravan Supplies today.
The Patriot has 10" Dexter electric brakes, with eight Nissan or Toyota stud patterns.
Mark said he has blank hubs he can drill to suit D4, 5 x 120.
He's done it a number of times.
I will get a quote and decide.

The standard AL-KO hubs will not except D3/D4/RRS alloy rims, because the D4 alloy rim is tapered and will not sit flat on the hub, I know this because I and others here have tried, I had to buy steel rims to fit to our camper, I now have 3 D3 rims sitting in the shed as extra spares now for when I damage a rim offroad.

The only alloys you can fit to AL-KO hubs that fit the D4 as well are BMW X5 in 17" as far as I know.

If you really want an extra spare for the car, get steels rims in 5 x 120 and fit tyres so that the rolling diameter is the same as your D4 19s, then you'll be able to use them on the D4, which is what we have done.
