    CPAP

Young Diane got an early Christmas prezzy today,,

The Gentleman from Jaycar sold me this very nice pure sine wave inverter to run Diane's machine at night.
For the price a surgical procedure was looking good instead--- but this has a USB outlet so got the nod ,,
huge 50A leads to the battery

I may have to get some ring terminals professionally crimped for the battery.

I find it hard to comprehend I need 40A DC to get 1.5A AC,,

Don't look at it as current to current. It is power to power with some losses in the unit.
Roughly speaking, you have 12x40 in with 1.5 x 240 (plus losses) out. There is also power factor to consider but I excluded it because it is simpler to think in terms of ball park figures.
In a lossless world that would be 40A in and 2A out. Not far off what you have.

Is it pure sine wave? I have a 2400W one.

When we had the infamous power outage here in SA, i used a 300W pure sinewave inverter of a 120amp deep cycle battery for over 4 hours to sleep with my cpap machine. When i spoke to the man at the 12volt shop he said that the humidifiers are the biggest power drain on a battery with an inverter coz it heats up the water. I set mine to the lowest humidity setting and after the power came on almost 6hrs after it went off, my battery was still not even 1/4 discharged. I do have an old cpap machine too. Cant afford a new one. My inverter is a REPCO one. Another trick with the humidifier is to only put enough water in it that u will need for the night as it not heating up water unnecessarily and so it needs less power.

Take a look at the Resmed S9.
No need for a humidifier no sore throats or runny nose etc in the morning and has auto set pressure. Has an optional 12v adapter to run it off cig socket or car battery Also has an optional battery pack.

Some of us CPAP users must have a humidifier. Your sleep test will identify most of how to treat your individual needs and if you have good support the initial test to select a suitable machine will also establish if you need a constant or variable pressure device. All of this impacts on power needs when off the grid. Or in SA when we are without the grid again. The amount of humidity needed varies by individual and experimentation. For example I lower the number when in Darwin and places like that but in Adelaide's drier climate mine is set at the mid range

As well we have moved to LifePO4 batteries with our 1000w inverter and that combination gives a lot more up time from the batteries for sure. As the machines can drain the SOC a lot.

As well and only recently there are some very good 12V machines on the market
