    Wiring for HD 600W inverter

I have acquired a HD (and heavy) 600W rated inverter ex an ambulance.

Question - what size wiring will I need from D4 through to camper trailer?

I've been advised that the unit can handle more, but hopefully I won't ever have occasion to try and draw more than the nominated 600W.

The unit is 600 km away, so will be a while before I can check what if any size fusing it already has (I can't imagine it would not be fused given its prior ambulance life).

    Thanks in anticipation.

O.K. Just a question, or two, before getting too excited:
Is the inverter a "Pure sine-wave type", or a "modified sine-wave" one?

A lot of gear needs a "pure-sine wave" supply.

Also, is the quoted output sufficient for your needs? Best to check that. 600W is not much.

If going ahead with it, best to mount the unit in the vehicle, close-ish to the battery. Use some heavy duty cable to hook-up, plus an isolator and fuse. 600w at 12v is still around 50Amps.

Run the feed to the camper when you need it, not as a permanent thing. Use orange (better for ultraviolet sun-light) cable, rated at 10 Amp. 240v cable is prone to damage if permanently strung and can be dangerous in that state.

Putting the inverter in the camper would mean that the supply cable would need to be several times thicker and be inefficient at that distance.

Hi Gavin and if your Traxide system includes the 6B&S to a rear Anderson plug, then you should be fine running the inverter But as Rovers4 posted, running a 240vac extension would be a simpler option.

Also, with the motor OFF, you will not be running that size inverter for more than a few minutes.

What exactly are you planning to power with the inverter?

Hi Tim. I bought my kit from you in March 2021 and it included the rear Anderson plug and second (rear) CIG. I'll have to check if it has the 6B&S cable but would assume so.

Yes it would only be used with engine running.

Hi again Gavin and yes your kit came with 6B&S ( 13.5mm2 ) cabling to the rear Anderson plug.

This is rated at 105 amp CONTINUOUS so will be more than adequate for the 50 amp+ load of the inverter if being run at near max.

That sort of current load over that distance will cause a fair bit of voltage drop but with the motor running, you can run that indefinitely.
