We are considering selling our solid caravan and getting a Jayco sway off road camper. We took a friends one away for easter and were quite happy with it. The only probles we could see was if you had to pack up or set up in the rain. Has anybody had experience with these types of campers? Do the beds and bedding get wet? How do the go with dust? and corrogations? I know when we had the camper trailer the canvas protected the bedding much better and we always through a blue tarp on top on it for further protection. All experiences would be appreciated.

had a goldstream flip top hard roof off road camper, highly recommend them for durability, ease of use and speed of set up.
I have a Jayco eagle. We put a poly tarp over beds and tuck under mattresses. This keeps the rain off the bedding. Having travelled outback I found no dust in mine whilst my mates van (pop top) had dust through everything. Hope this helps.
Thanks, looks like I missed out on this one but they will suit our needs as we have a couple of kids. I was concerned that when you pull the canvas off the bed to slide it in that the bedding was open to the elements. I also noticed that your hands have to be clean or you mark the cream canvas. The seal around the top also looked like it would feed dust into the canvas and possibly the bedding.

I have a Jayco Hawk and think it is great. I have had problems with dust getting into it due to the venting for the fridge and on the door. Dust was only confined to the floor though. I have taken it down the Oodanatta track and Meriene loop with the only other misshap was a stray rock taking out a water line and stones destroying the break wires to one side.
While working for a company called Lowline many years ago that hired out vans of all types, we found the Jayco's were excellent for what most people did with them but I must agree the Goldstream steps it all up a notch and makes a much stronger set up which is simple to use but are normaly a fair bit more expensive.
As far as setting up goes, if it is raining, trow a tarp over the roof before lifting the roof and work from under it and then you or your bedding will get wet and as long as you put it up again within 24 hours from packing it up wet then you shouldnt have any problems as long as it dries out again.
As long as the canvas is swelled properly they dont leak, it's just the same as a swag or canvas tent, when you get it you soak it and let it dry and then they wont leak but you can add a fly if you want but it's extra setting up.
We only had 1 broken drawbar but that was dew to an accident and a few rips and maeks on the canvas but they were hired out after all, the lift cables were a bit of a problem at times but they were used a lot more than what most peoples vans would be and apparently the older ones were better than the newer models.
They are a good van but I would buy a Goldstream if I had the dosh.
We have a Corvette camper, 1971 fibreglass fully manual set up which has been everywhere on mini wheels even into Wanangatta station behind a Subi Brumby. It leaks it gets dust everywhere but it is some where to sleep and is easy to tow and set up but I wouldnt recomend them to anyone even though my family has owned ours for 21 years.
Thanks all, I thought this thread had died a natural death. The sale to the first buyer fell through so we brought it and are off to Mt Warning this weekend. We have done the Cape so thr rough roads are pretty much down hill from there. I know what has been said about the other brands being better quality in fit and finish is true but I can by a second TDI for the difference in price.
The only mods I am going to do are to convert the spare tyre to be carried under the gas bottles at the front like the expanda models and fit a rear boot for the porta pottie, buckets and out doors sort of stuff. I will also make up a drop dow bike rack for the rear to take the four bikes. I believe movinf the tyre to the front will equal out the weight going on the back.
Next year we are looking at a 6 week trip through NSW, Victoria and up to the high country and even the Landrover 60th at Cooma. We will either love it or hate it by then.
