    Question Camper Trailer

Have been in the market for a 2nd hand camper for some time. Will be towing behind D2 TD5. Have been looking at Cub campers[possibly earlier models- robust construction]and liked the flip top solid floor arrangement. THEN a friend purchased an older poptop in very good condition a HIGHWAY caravan-brand name.It is an all fiberglass construction and looks quite sturdy solidAframe towing and 13" mag wheels. Has anyone heard of these ? They are quite compact and looks good-I have the opportunity to buy this van at a very competative price-thanks

Upgrading is not going to feasible and absolutely pointless if the chassis is not to par and with 13’ wheels currently I think at this stage we can assume that it won’t be (but check) – there is absolutely no point bolting the ultimate offroad suspension and big wheels to a light vehicle base.

I have no doubt that in a conservative set of hands a standard set up will go to nearly all the places the average family wants to see. If you drive hard and fast on remote tracks you will break even the best of rigs. With caution and lots of care these lighter campers can go a long way, remember heavy duty off road vans and trailers have not been around all that long, and the tracks/roads were a lot worse - what did the Aus travelling public do back then??? Not go??? Doubt it…. It will be a case of knowing and staying below the limitations of the equipment in question.

Don’t p*ss about modifying something light in an attempt to make it heavy duty – that will be on going – suspension axel & brakes, now replace the light chassis, now the body mounts, now since it heavier reregister it, and on and on and on… Either be careful and use the light unit or buy a heavy one.
Under current ADR if you change a trailer wheel size it is supposed to be inspected and registration changed to suit - if it passes... There is a diminishing load limit as wheel size increases on all axle/brake/bearing specs.

Me personally – there are NOW more suitable travelling options available, so I would use one of those…

    Hi Greg ,
My little van has done a lot of dirt and corrugations and just refuses to fall to bits!
It's still on 13' LTT's but has been lifted for extra clearance and remains level with the fender so doesn't need to be unhitched for overnight stops.
I had an engineer fit an extra piece of chassis and thereby jack the van up 3".Tows just as good can cruise at 100k on the black.
Don't know that I explained that very well-springs off-extra height added-springs back on.

I brought a "sunlover" camper that orinally had 13 inch rims, the people I purchased it off had done a hack job of putting 15" rims under it with 33's. I had to disconnect the springs and lift the camper off the tyres to get them out (not a hope of changing a tyre on the side of the road).
I welder a complete 75 x 50 rhs chassis under it extending the drawbar an extra 600mm while on the job. Fitted electric brakes and landrover rims with 31 x10's. It now has plenty of clearance, sits a little high in the rear of the camper but tows well.
    cheers
