Personally I had a bad experience with the Tekonsha, others rave about them. Most are fine though with your weight trailers and it has more to do with whether the trailer has 1, 2 or 3 axles.

    RedArc
    Hayman Reese
    Tekonsha

    To name 3 brands.

The main thing is to ensure the brake system on the trailer is actually compatible with the controller you choose. This is particularly relevant to the Tekonsha Prodigy and P3. Some older trailer brake systems won't work with these units.

I have a Tekonsha Prodigy to control the brakes on my 1500kg c'van. It has been faultless.

One of the advantages, when I bought my controller, was that the unit didn't have to be horizontal, and you could regulate the braking effect through a calibration wheel. I'm sure that other units can do this now.

    Best Wishes,
    Peter

    Brake Controller

The Tekonsha Prodigy or the P3 is the go for any weight of van because they can be set up as required to suit.

Don't get a Tekonsha Voyager: they work well but are hard to set up properly and need constant adjustment. The Prodigy is much easier to set up. It also can be moved from car to car just by unplugging it as long as the other car has the appropriate wiring and bracket installed.

Do not even consider a Redarc controller. I have personal experience of two in my immediate family and both were junked in favour of a Prodigy.

The location of the controller is very imortant in the event that you ever need to use it in a hurry. I have found that the best spot is screwed to the bottom of the slide out ash tray/coin holder. It is immediately to hand there. If you leave enough wire on the loom, you can still use the tray, and it does not leave holes which are visible when you take it out.

I thought I had posted a long reply to this last night but alas it's been lost into the ether!

I have a Tekonsha Prodigy and it has been faultless.

It is regularly used to control my tandem braked axle car float with up to (and over) 2000KG. It has also been used to control a tri-axle 4000KG plant trailer carrying a Land Rover Forward Control with steel 11' trayback including spare transmissions up Mt Victoria.

I can swap the controller from car to car without having to align and balance the controller to the vehicle.

Most importantly it has saved me from a dangerous event where a serious uncontrolled fishtail happened in the M5 East Tunnel. I travel in complete confidence when I'm using the Prodigy controller.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
