Interstate tow vehicles and trailers

Are there any issues in Aussie if the tow vehicle is registered in a different state from the trailer it's towing?

We're travelling from NZ in April for a year long trek around Aussie and it's possible the Land Rover we'll be purchasing will be from a different state from the camper trailer.

Is this likely to be a problem as we'd like to avoid the cost/hassle of changing regos if possible.

As far as I know there are no issues with the trailer being registered in a different state - I am sure that this often happens - in fact I have frequently rented a trailer (Vic) when visiting my son in Melbourne to tow behind my (NSW) 110.

What may be an issue is that any vehicle is supposed to be registered in the state of residence of the owner - not sure how you go about this when you are a visitor, but someone will.

I have been towing a trailer registered in Tasmania living in Qld with a LR registered in Qld for many years and never have any problems.

Most times when I hire a trailer, they seem to be a Victorian rego, and my car is NSW registered so can't see any issues.

Have also been RTA/Police inspected when towing a rowing boat trailer (NSW reg) towing with a hire vehicle (WA registered) and no comment was made of it, so can't see you having any problems!

I often tow a SA registered trailer with my Vic registered RRC with no dramas.

Might be an idea to check with your vehicle insurance company as some time ago I was informed by mine that the trailer was not covered if it was registered interstate..............Brian

as long as both the tow vehicle and trailer are both registered and not stolen, i dont think anyone cares!

Unless you're hiring or borrowing the vehicle and/or trailer, you will have to transfer the registrations into your name within 14 days (NSW) anyway.
So I'd check which state is the cheapest & do it there.

There was a time when almost every heavy transport trailer (on a semi trailer rig) seems to have been registered in South Australia irrespective of the rego on the prime mover... !

With the fine old South Australian habit of writing the rego. number on the trailer with chalk or felt pen.

Or are you thinking of the time in the 70's when a firm of South Australian solicitors came up with a ruse to avoid payment of Road Maintenance Contributions? Almost every owner driver and small fleet in Australia were registered at 28 Dobson Drive, Pooraka. This very successful scheme killed off road maintenance contributions.

There was a WA fleet at that time that ran their own avoidance scheme. The trucks were "owned" by ***** Nominees SA, Vaduz, Leichtenstein and operated by their their $2 Australian operations company.
