Thread: To buy an extended warranty or not?

In my experience with Ford and Holden these warranties are a minefield of miss-information.

The Holden warranty was basically an insurance policy that covered bugger all. It wasn't worth the paper it was written on.

With my Territory it is an extended factory warranty which still presented some challenges when claiming. A large claim was initially rejected by the dealer. Then I involved Ford customer care and it was resolved.

So if its a factory underwritten extended warranty it may be ok.

If its an insurance based warranty you would be better off putting the $2k in a bank account to cover the cost of unexpected repairs.

Depends on who you buy it from. I have one on my D2 that is good and worth the money. It is backed up by Rovercare too. Consider it as insurance against the possibility that repairs costing more than $2000 will occur during the next couple of years. As with insurance, if you don't have to make a claim you can say "well that was a waste", but if you do then you can say "phew, glad I had that."

It is not the single expense that costs more than the two grand, it's the accumulated expenses over that period from things you claimed on. And, while it might cost a couple of grand, it will cover expenses far in excess of that and fix far more than the 2 grand in your bank account will.

Also, if you have some warranty left when you sell it should add to the the value of the vehicle and indicates to the potential buyer that here is an owner who cared about their car.

Read the PDS as some are not worth the bytes they are written in.
Allianz is good though make sure your dealer/mechanic have dealt with them. I have had a few claims so far, paid for itself.
Do not get the Aliance one too many get out clauses in the PDS.
Allianz mush be purchased before the factory warranty expires.

Interesting that most say go for it but some posts seem to disagree. If you have a warranty let WhiteD3 know your experience.

Extended factory warranty is probably the best option. Some of the aftermarket ones can be a big waste of money - choose carefully if you go down this path by checking with workshops/mechanics who have had dealings with them. From my experience Swann is great.

Even your new car warranty is underwritten. There are just less out clauses for them.

My Ford Territory warranty was a freebie deal at the 2006 Brisbane Motor Show so it cost me nothing.

My plan for the Discovery is to create a fund in its second year and put dollars into it to cover unexpected repairs out of warranty. If I haven't used it by the time I turn the car over it will go toward the new car at that time.

Even the good extended warranties are only average at best.
