Thanks for following up Tor. You raised a good point after contacting the finance guy for the dealer...heads up on the level of the Allianz cover to others who are looking at it.

Mind you, I like that the Allianz cover only requires you to follow manufacturers service guide, not the blanket 6mths 10,000km like AWN.

Having read the stories on this thread, one has to seriously consider the purchase of the extended warranty. Initially I was not going to spend the 3k for the extended warranty, but these stories make me reconsider my earlier choice.

I know of many Landcruisers near the 100,000km mark requiring major works around the gearbox and drive train.

Nissan Patrols on the on the hand are based on a truck base and they are bullet proof. I never had an ounce of trouble with my old vehicle and I pushed it.

Having now bought the Discovery, I still have no regrets and I am really looking forward to it. But from these stories, it does sound like they are not as reliable when comparing them to Jap 4WD's. I know these may be fighting words, but as a new comer to this vehicle, I am a little concern and maybe I should spend the money for the peace of mind.

But the dam thing is expensive - again an indicator that I should get it as more vehicles must be making a claim than not. My current SUV, cost me $800 for 2yr extended warranty from the manufacturer. If it was about that money I wouldn't think twice. But at 3.3k it requires more thought.

Problem is that you always hear about all the trouble people have had and how the insurance has saved them.

Can those with a positive experience say a few words. Did you have any trouble within the first 100,000km's ?

you have time to make a decision as the warranty can be extended any time before the current one runs out. Doing it that way allows you to base your decision on your own experience and and by then you will have built up your own knowledge of the brand and its particulars. From my perspective, I have made one claim on warranty which wa for the compressor, my understanding is this component is now much more reliable.

Also, I did purchase the extended warranty for peace of mind.

Quoted $3600 in Perth by dealer for 2 year extension through Allianz, supposedly 'on special' for May down from $4,100. Not sure how negotiable they are but will try and knock them down......

Spoke to LRA today to see what I'd be up for to extend another 2 years. While he said he couldn't say, eventually he indicated it should be anything from $3,000 but not as much as $5k. So it seems the dealers can pick their commission as with any finance product they are agents for...

Therefore that bit about on special is probably just a sales pitch to add to the rest of the lines they're spinning about how now is the right time to sign, I reckon anyway.

In summary, extended warranty from LR dealer $3-4k.

Extended warranty from non LR dealer, from $2k, but not as good as LR assured, even though both are underwritten by Allianz.

The one through a LR dealer has a no-cost roadside assist...both cover total claims up to the purchase price of the vehicle and up to market value for any single claim. Both expire when ODO reaches 200k.

The LR assured one must be done before standard 3 yr expires.

The generic Allianz one can be done after 3yr warranty has expired, must be done at point of sale though and dealer must be authorised by Allianz to sell it.

I'm sure there's more to it, but that's what I've managed to put in the memory bank for when I find the right one.

Hey Great, Well I spent some time the other day ringing around to see what price I could get the insurance for and emailed a bunch as well. Seems like some dealers are not interested unless you are buying a car from them.

One thing I did manage to find out is that they classify them into categories. Cat 5 is the highest which seems to be the one everyone is after and is a LR manufacturers warranty. There is a lower category for $2K but that was parts only, I did not catch the category number though, Sorry.

My Allianz extended warranty, paid for 5 years ago, has now paid for itself.

I paid around $1200 out of pocket (packaged into a lease etc) at the time, and claimed around $700 for something last year. But as my 70,000+km D4 now needs new front control bushes and ball joints, I went to an independent mechanic who has just called them and got the approval to claim this work (approx $1400) on extended warranty. They wanted a quote for the replacement of the front control arms, as opposed to remove and replace just the worn parts, and chose to do the remove & replace. They declined to replace the unnatural wear on the tyres caused by the problem (fair enough).

Needless to say I am very happy, as the dealer had told me this was a wear and tear item (fair enough) and would not have been covered under factory warranty. Due to this, originally I was not going to even try to put in a claim, but on the weekend, another D4 owner with the NWA extended warranty told me that they had got the front control arms done under a claim.

Edit: One thought is that if the warranty had been "full price" at the time then I wouldn't be ahead yet. And at "discounted price" I would only be breakeven. But at "after packaging" price, I am definitely ahead.
