    Duel Battery Mod Advice

Hi just after some more advice.

I’m currently installing a Safari Snorkel on my 1996 V8 D1 with ABS. While I’m at it I am going to move the Power Steering Pump and Coil to prepare for the duel battery system to go in shortly. What I’m after is some pictures and advice to point me in the right direction.

I have searched through many posts and have gathered some good info. For the power steering pump I think I will cut off the mounting loop and bolt up some flat steel to extend it out past the air box.

The problem I have is the coil. Most people seem to mount it behind the air box but I have the ABS unit there. Any ideas to best mount the coil with some pictures will help.

I also read in one post that he had to move the SRS Sensor. I did not know anything about the sensor and got worried I might set the Air Bag off while playing around. Does anyone know where this sensor is and is it a problem putting the battery in the front left?

    Any advice will be appreciated.

    Cheers, David.

Mines a left hooker but the relocation of the power steering reservoire remains the same.
The coil is also easy to relocate and won't take up much space, you can even use the same king lead etc.

I don't have airbags so can't help there I'm afraid.

Thanks Streaky, thats what I had in mind for the Power steering pump but the ABS unit is where you have the coil.

can anyone with ABS tell me where they have mounted the coil.

    Cheers David.

Only the 1995 MY had the crash sensors in the engine bay. 1996 onwards relied on a decelerometer only.

    Hello,
i moved my coil up behind the front shocker tower using the original mount. I then got a new H/T lead because it is further away so the orginal was too short. Then using some 4 mm wire just extended the loom. On top of the coil i found a mini cooper coil cap to keep the water out. My power steering resivor has stayed in the same spot i have just bent it away from the battery. hope this helps.

I've spent the night in the shed and relocated the power steering pump. I made a bracket that extends it out beside to air box and sits nicley. I have taken plenty of picture of the process so I'll put some up soon. If anyone would like them sent to them let me know.

I would still like to see some pictures of the coil moved on a disco with ABS. Have a few ideas but don't want to commit yet.

    Cheers, David.

Where ever you decide to relocate the coil & ignition amplifier...be sure that you earth te coil properly and also use the heat dissapating compound between the two mating faces of the amp and the mounting plates surface.
Heat build up in the amp will cause intermitent cutting out of the ignition.

    Thanks Discojim,

The pictures are very helpfull. When you explained putting it up behind the shock tower I was trying to fit the whole amp and coil assembley together and could not fit it there. I see you must have left the amp where it was and just moved the coil and extended the wiring loom. Look like a job for Friday as I have the day off.

Does the coil get much water and muck on it there as it looks like it would come through the inner guard, has this been an issue.

    Cheers, David.
