Td5 Manual Fuel Economy, how's yours???

    G'day all

I just filled up the Discovery I've been driving for the past month or so after selling my D1. Finally got around to properly brimming the tank and punching the numbers and worked out my economy.

    MY 00.5 Td5 Manual 11L/100km

    Vs.

    MY98 Tdi Auto 14.7L/100km

And that is around town, both cars driven with a wide open throttle (inherited lead foot syndrome )

I couldn't believe it, the Td5 is so much faster and goes heaps better, but the difference is amazing!!! I couldn't do anything to make it worse short of increasing weight or wind resistance.

    So whats everyone else getting???

    Cheers
    Will

Less now that I can do 100
Normally I can get around 700-750, and thats from running the gauntlet between bathurst and orange for uni, with lots of hills, high revs and overtaking
The run up to Glenreagh saw it jump a bit with highway driving at 100, however after filling up I decided to sit on 90 to see if my upgrade from red to green p's was having an effect, and I could have theoretically cleared 900-950kms if I just sat on 90.
Not bad for a 2T+ house brick

    Your car's an auto haha

I could have done ~850 in town, so I'm expecting about 1000 on the highway (well mums does that.

I haven't driven as slow as 100 since i was on my L's on the highway lol, need bigger tyres to up the gearing a bit for the highway as at 120 it's singing.

But yeah it baffles me how it can be that good on fuel. But fuel economy was a lot better when i used to do 90-95 back as a learner. I just don't have the patience

    Cheers

you will find plenty of posts on this if you look.

mine with chip, front/rear/side bars and 245/75 muddies is getting mid 11's mixed driving and mid 14s when towing the camper fully loaded with family and dogs.
originally without the mods and stock tyres 10/100km was possible mixed driving.

My stock manual gets 11's around town, 9's in the sticks and with a fully loaded 1.5t camper and family onboard ... gets high 12's.

About to put in an EGR removal kit and straight through centre pipe so we'll see if that changes.

I remember when I was getting 9's and 10's out of my disco, then I went to slightly larger tyres 245 70r16's, fitted a roof rack and put a rear drawer and fridge slide system in. Now consistently get 11's and 12's around town and 13's to 14's with the 1.7 tonne caravan in tow at 100km's. Very happy with the fuel economy on the D2, what makes it even better is that mates in Patrols and Cruisers are consistently getting 14's to 15's when running empty.

TD5 auto, stock tyres, bullbar, roof rails, 2" lift, 200kg tools in the back, 1 tonne lawnmowing trailer - 13.6l/100km around town.
Same vehicle but unladen with no trailer on the highway from Campbelltown to Newcastle & back generally doing 5-10km/hr over the speed limit - 10.7l/100km.
I'm happy with these figures - slightly better mileage than my 300tdi Defender, and about 20-30km/hr faster
(I know, these are worlds apart, its just they are the last 2 I've owned (after 2 series 3's & a Niva)) Hmmm, maybe i should change my user name to "Landy Phreak"

I get around 10.5 around town at the moment, with a normal weight of 2350 due to extra bits added. Overall economy for the past 6 years is shown in graphs in post below:

Note: I get 5% better than shown due to larger tyres under reading kms.

I am aware of my shortcomings (most of them anyway). Started as a business need and now is just easy. Every fuel docket, just enter the data into the spreadsheet and update the graph occasionally; it takes 2 minutes.

At the risk of making impressions worse, I also record brand of fuel and location. I find I get a statistically better result with BP diesel. Haven't tried the super diesel from Caltex though (Vortex?).
