Yes I read that with some amusement. They were all worried about turbo location, which is pretty straightforward to fix. I liked your V8 petrol fuel carrying calcs.

I would expect a Nissan TD42T to be both slower and worse on fuel than the 5.7L Nissan engines. The TD42 is indirect injection and seriously inefficient. Yes it's a strong engine which can take a lot of boost. But because of the inefficiency it takes a lot more fuel and boost to give the same power.

Many petrol engines are more efficient at rated power than the TD42T is. Same with the Toyota 1HZ. But the 1HZ isn't in any way a tough engine.

As for the 'Big Nissan' FD6, it was reasonably tight, but with a few mods to the sump and a bit of fancy work with the air intake it worked well. Yes, it was heavy but 3 leaves instead of the STD 2 cured that and sat it about 20mm higher than STD height. When I fitted the engine, it was still a rag top and I actually used the second leaf from the rear in the front and then put a spacer in the rear to fill the gap and save changing bolts! The axles on the 101's are well built and mine handled the motor well, very well in fact. Trailer towing at 80mph was a regular occurrence on British Motorways, and the looks I used to get we're fantastic!! You're right in saying that the gearbox went back about 150mm, but this in turn cured the front prop drone. As for turbos... Everyone naturally wants to bolt the turbo to the side of the engine... There is no saying it can't be at the back just above the clutch. Nice slim exhaust manifold along one side, and feed straight into the inlet the other side.... Seriously keen about finding another, just got to bring myself around to selling the 130! Here's the latest engine idea as yes, Dougal, you are probably right about the TD42... Cummins 6bd out of a Leyland Roadrunner, along with its synchro gearbox, attached to an adapted LT230.... Just reading back thru the past comments, I noticed you asked about the radiator position Ron. Sorry, I missed that until now. The rad stayed in the same place, and I mounted a big fan on the front of the Nissan and sited the engine to suit that and a few other things, then went from there, building two fairly intricate engine mount plates so as to not alter the 101's chassis. It was just the gear linkage, props and gearbox tunnel that got modded. Found another old photo of it just before the engine went in...

You've given me lots of ideas.

Amongst other things I have an engineless 101 in the project pile, and have recently had offer of a Leyland 401 engine with a 5 speed spicer box for sensible money.
Apparently 150bhp from somewhere around 6.5 litres, has potential don't you think?

Are they IDI or DI???

A 4BD1T will give you the same power from 3.9L...

DasLandRoverMan, don't do it! Leyland horses are the Falabella horses of the world! Old British diesels are lazy! Silly way of describing it, but Leylands, BMC's, Land Rover IDI's and until recently Perkins always sound 'fluffy'. Fire up a CAT, Cummins, Sisu or Nissan and you get that course crisp 'ready to go' sound!! (Said by a pom). It'd be lazy to start, have no 'top end' and would need some tall gearing too as they are not a revvy lump. Better suited to the bus it came out of. You'd be much better off selling your engineless 101 to me!!!:D:D. Jokes apart, Jap 6's are revvy, and available to you with a bit of work, or the Cummins and box out of a Road Runner. That's what I'd be doing If I were you. If the 130 goes, that's exactly what I'll be doing. Another Nissan FD6t or similar, and I'm even thinking about a fancy adapted power shift box, because believe it or not geared right a 101 actually drives really well at 110kph/70mph.

As for 'four pots', nah thanks. The 101 says 'light truck'! It needs a big 6 and the chassis rails and shape lend it to it!! How good does that Cummins powered 110 sound on YouTube!....

I agree that a 6 would be preferable, I was just trying to point out that an isuzu 4-pot has better power and economy than the leyland...


But there are plenty of 4-pot cummins out there that would have eaten your 6-pot nissan diesel for breakfast...

Disgusting amount of smoke for a compound turbo setup. Turbos wrong size brah.

Seemed to have no boost low down and run out of rpm at the top end... I hear you tho Isuzurover, I've just never been a fan of 4 pots, and up until last week there were two 4bd's in my shed! I wish I had had an IPad type thing back then... There would have been some interesting videos of the 101 in full flight! Their might still be if I get another!!!:D Think we are all in agreement that the Leyland would not be ideal!

The engine I was looking at isn't actually labelled as a Leyland, all the markings on it say DAF, but I'm told (by my mate who's an oracle on all things diesel) that its a 401, which is a high quality engines compared to a 6.354 or the likes.

Fair enough an Isuzu might make 150bhp, so does the Mazda in my 110, but the torque figures can't help but be higher?

All theoretical at the minute, no money to spend on engines.
