Ron, can you please clarify a point for me - does the cable drum have a clutch or something similar on it to keep the tension constant on the cable? Just thinking that as it is chain driven, as the cable layers build up, it would need to turn at a different speed?

My next project is fitting the rest of my winch up, so this thread came along at an opportune time and I'll probably be asking a lot of questions as I do it.

    Cheers - Gav.
correct .......the cable storage drum is driven much faster than the capstan via a friction drag clutch so the cable has a slight tension between the drum and the capstan so it always feeds on the storage drum nicely.

I have in the past broken a winch cable by asking too much of my winch and adjusting the load clutch up too high.
The cable will break at the point of most flex/strain and that is at the capstan pulley if the rest of the cable is OK.

Well, I've just learnt loads about a 101 winch! Bojan (offender90) and I were just talkin about these winches and their workings a few nights ago. I had the basic principal right but didn't know it was a capstan drum with the cable being wound onto the second drum. Cheers for that decent explanation Ron!!

This is not me, I didn't know the pic was been taken
Normally you would not stand near a winch rope, but if you look you can see the cable is being winched out as the reversing lights shows the vehicles main gearbox is in reverse gear.

These are pics I took for Dodge as he had to fit up a winch from scratch.
It shows pulley and mounting details, but they do not stand out well due too the black chassis under coating.
