    Self recovery winching rearwards.
Note at start just idling out in first gear and then I hop in and winch in much faster using 3rd gear ?

Great pics Ron, thanks. 4 questions regarding the winch cable-

    - what cable do you use?
    - who makes the for you?
    - how much do they cost?
    - why do you have so many?

    Cheers - Gav.

This very short vid is proof that you need to pull the cable out while winching out and that it will not bird cage if you don't.
The vehicle has it winch enguaged and it is winching out wards in reverse gear at idle.
I have hop out though the mud and grab the cable and get it to bite on the capstan by pulling on it lightly and walk the cable out.

few years ago I broke my cable and needed a new one.
The cable is a odd spec and the swage on the end of it is a odd thing too .
I got I think 7 made in a group buy sort of deal.
Each cable was tested because of the odd swage.
Illawarra wire ropes made the cables.
    they were all sold.
I did note the other day one of the UK 101 suppliers has the original winch ropes still.

I though I better add another piece of important information about the 101s winch.
A standard 101s winch cable is 65mtrs in length and that is a good reach for the type of vehicle compared to modern electric winches which carry only about 25 to 30mtrs of wire rope.
Of this 65mtrs about 60 mtrs is useable.
The last 5 mtrs of cable should be painted red to warn of maximum extension.
If you extend the cable too far, it will simply pull straight out of the winch and you could lose the winched load and have a great coil of winch rope to take home.
To rethread the winch cable inside the winch is a confusing and awkward job which is best done with plenty of time at home and correct information of where the cable threads.
Note the red paint will fade with time or was not painted on if the mechanics were in a hurry.
If it is not known if the cable is red painted, you need to crawl under the vehicle when safe to do so at look at the cable storage drum for cable remaining if you think the cable is getting near maximum extension.
