I just use the GPs speed in my GPS or my app on my phone.

Of course GPS speedos dont work in tunnels, for a while after a cold start or where satellite reception is poor - also they are not accurate when speed is fluctuating such as accelerating or decelerating.

Really GPS speedos are not really an effective alternative to mechanical speedos.

Are they legal in Aust as the sole means of determining speed in vehicles??

I came across this company the other day. Not cheaper, but MUCH prettier...

And you can customise the appearance.

I wonder if they do them in 24volt...?

Hi I was only looking at this today myself, as my speedo is erratic much better with the new gearbox but still not good.
I would prefer one with a external mount antenna like these ones I have been looking at, due to the almost vertical windscreen, the external antenna will give me better coverage and faster fix times with full sky view.
Would not be as much of an issue with canvas tops though.
And no they are not legal as your only form of speed indication. I have been down that route.

When I asked the RTA in NSW they said no because they don't work under all conditions.
    Cheers

One of the reasons for a poor speedo reading is lack of lubrication in the speedo cable or a damaged/kinked sheath.

Remove the cable inner by undoing the connection at the back of the speedo. Withdraw the inner cable and clean off the old oil and any grit then lubricate the whole cable with a fine machine oil like sewing machine oil.

While it's out inspect the entire length for damage or unusual wear patterns, this may indicate a kink at that location.

You should also check that the path of the cable outer is flowing curves rather than tight right angle turns.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
