    Update

    Hi All,

Well - no photos, but quite a bit of work done on the 101 this weekend, and all of it thanks to Super Gav!

    Fluids drained
    Gearbox out
    Rear Main Seal Replaced
    Gearbox back in
    Front prop shaft boot replaced
    Rear prop shaft boot replaced
Gearbox selector adjusted (can now get PRND321 instead of just PRND32)
    Rear propshaft universal joint replaced
    Viscous fan unit replaced

A fair bit of swearing and cut knuckles, but we got there in the end.

I felt like a council worker - supervising most of the time...

Thanks Super Gav - couldn't do it without you...

Now we need to finish off some other items and it's off for a RWC...

Good work guys!! SA road worthy was fairly easy. I went armed with the rego numbers of other SA 101's so they knew what they were.. I also rang up before hand and got a statement of requirements which listed things like exhaust outlets, reversing lights, sash belts, no need for an interior mirror etc etc. I was then able to go armed with the list of requirements, so that when asked about stuff, I was able to hand emails, lists etc over showing I'd addressed these points and the tester then no longer seemed to fussed as I'd done my homework. Good luck with it all.. Hope to see it on the road soon.

    Today's Work

    Hi All,

Well the 101 is getting closer and closer to RWC...

Today's work (thanks again to Super Gav):

    Replace Engine Oil & Filter
Replace Auto Trans Oil & Filter
    Replace Transfer Case Oil
    Replace Coolant
    Re-wire headlights on the roof
Remove clutch pedal assembly, slave/master cylinder
    Check Wiring
    Install rear view mirror
Fix latch on a cupboard door
Check Front & Rear Diff Oil Levels
    Check Lights
    Check Fan
    Adjust Fan Belt

We took it for a test drive - all good, but have discovered that the flame traps aren't installed and it's causing an oil leak... But that's another story.

    We're getting there!

    101 Update

    Hi All,

Well the 101 is getting closer and closer to RWC - although it feels like it is happening at a glacial pace...

I sent the 101 off to a local Land Rover expert to have the carb's tuned - and also to check the car to see what (if anything) was needed for the RWC.

The local expert is great - but painfully slow...

    * He has fitted the flame traps
    * He has tuned the engine
    * He replaced a globe that wasn't working (I hadn't even noticed)
    * He adjusted the rear brakes

He uses a mobile LPG guy - and I had instructed him to get the LPG tank pressure tested, at a cost of between $300-$400. The LPG guy came out, they removed the tank, and inspected the entire system. The LPG guy said: "This system does not comply with Australian rules and regulations. Various fixtures/fittings will need to be replaced. You have to rip out the entire thing and start again."

I can't get the RWC with a half installed system, so I have instructed the mechanic to remove the entire lot. Long term - I am going to install a second petrol tank for greater range...

Next up - the mechanic noticed that the speedo wasn't working. He inspected the speedo cable and realised that the end was broken off. He also said that the speedo drive unit is stuck solid in the gearbox... None of this is news to me - Gavin had already worked that out...

But you can't get a RWC without a working speedo. I asked the mechanic to repair the cable / unit... I was hoping that he might have a magical trick, knowing that he is an expert...

He came back to me yesterday and said: "I have removed the speedo cable and sent it away to have a new one made up, the company I use copies the current cable for length. You should have it within 2-3 days. As for the drive unit - it's damaged, and I can't get it out. So I am going to remove the back of the gearbox and get it on the bench. Once on the bench I rekon I will have more luck getting the unit out."

Everything that he has said makes sense...

It just takes time to get these things resolved. I know that I will be very happy once these issues are fixed, and I can finally start using it!

Fingers crossed I get to Melrose - but my gut feeling is that it isn't looking good.

There is no need to get a speedo cable made - they are a standard series 3 LT95 cable maybe also common to other LT95s.

It is good to see you are getting things sorted but unfortunately finding others.

Would that be the same for the auto gearbox?

    Hi Garry,

My 101 has a Range Rover automatic gearbox in it. Because of this it has a longer front prop shaft.

I had assumed that because the front Prop Shaft was longer - that perhaps the engine/gearbox/transfer box combination was longer, and therefore it was better to be safe than sorry, and hence that's why I agreed to get one made up.

It's probably more expensive - but at this point I just want it fixed!

Gav may know the answer to this one?

Speedo drive is the same between the LT95 and the Borg Warner TC - the speedo was connected, but the cable was stuck fast in the corroded drive, and no amount of wriggling, pulling or anything would free it, so when we dropped the box out, the cable was damaged.

As mentioned, the only real way to get this sorted is to take the arse off the TC and punch the old speedo drive out. Personally, I think the end of the existing cable where it broke could have been re shaped to go back in a new drive, but a new cable would be easier.

Prop shaft length is very different to the standard 101 as the auto box and BW TC put the drive a lot further back. the back prop shaft is quite short, but the angles on both are good. The front drive shaft was very noisy - I think due to a combination of the drive angle - it is further to the drivers side of the car than the LT95 would have it, and the fact the prop shaft looks like it was a back yard job - it worked fine, but the noise was shocking. Hopefully these drive shafts are what we are looking for to shut the over run noises the 101's make.

It seems like identical shafts used in the UK have been successful.

It's been a long haul for you Tom, but hopefully you are on the home stretch. Would love to see you be able to get to Melrose - I know the vehcile is up to it once you get it on the road.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

    Ok - didn't realise that.

Hi guys. The standard speedo cable will fit.. The rear PTO face on the LT230 (same transfer case as in Toms I assume) is virtually flush with the front face of the chassis x member on mine with the diesel so its a lot further back. With a little bit of careful re routing the cable is surprisingly long! I also have a few spare LT230 speedo drives if that helps. Can bung one in the post.. Don't forget the GPS Speedo option... As for going over the pits... they didn't even check to see if mine works!! Good luck for Melrose!! You can do it!! Borrow the ID off another 101 for the week!!
