I currently have vehicles in my back yard, side driveway, out on the street, at the farm there are three the truck shed, in three of the four horse stalls (the 4th has a 4.6V8-R380/LT230 and a 1595cc engine), 1 SIIB and a Perentie 6X6 passenger body in the hay shed. A Mk3 Inter, an ex-SADF SIIB, 2 army trailers and a RRC body frame in a friends chook shed, another stage one up at Colo Heights. In fact there is also a SIIA FFW over in Nungarin W.A, another SIII in South Nowra, a FFT tub at Sanctuary Point.
I'm sure we can find more space.
What was the third step again?

OK. So basically I have still done nothing to the 101's since the last post.
I've been busy with a new job and the Mercedes.
I have been, however, trying to source some Michelins through Costco. I'll be wanting ten.
This leads me into Paint.
I'll be wanting to clean and paint the rims before I put the new tyres on. While I'm at it, I'll get some other parts painted. What paint do I use? What paint have you used, why and what have your experiences been?

I spent the morning crawling over 30-248's motor trying to find the engine no. DoTSA have on record.

I've found the correct, original engine number in the correct location but that's not the one DoTSA has on record. I need to buy a pressure washer and “give it a gurnie”. I just have to find the engine number that starts with an “S” for the DoTSA paperwork.

I noticed under the paint on the door there are ridges. I can just make out the christmas tree symbol. Above the christmas tree symbol I can just make out some numbers 5484 about two inches high. Does anyone know the significance of these?
I have committed to have a 101 going to Corowa 2011. I think Dave Jump witnessed that statement.

Apparently there are only eight in the country at the moment but they'll be getting new stock soon. Costco don't usually sell these but I've been talking to the manager of the tyre dept. and he said he will see what he can do for me.

Sorry to come in late to this thread,but I have just read through the saga of 30-248, and I might be able to shed some light on the subject, in the 80's or early 90's there were a couple of these 101's converted into tourist offroad buses,with hand built bodies, these predated the OKA's and it is from the 101's that the OKA idea stemmed, this vehicle could well be one of those hand built buses, hence the SA dept fixation on a bus,the engine number should be the same as is listed in the REMLR files, or very close to it,the "S" could well be a mis-read "6" or the "9" (dirt in the stamped No) {well! that's close enough} if it is the "6" then the "9" will be ahead, or if it is the "9" the the next number will be a 6 then 100675 with an "A" suffix, if the motor was changed to another 3.5 then the number would start with 18 or 22 "G" ******** or if it is a Rangie motor could have **"D"***** or the early ones 5*******
Also, just above the engine No is the Compression Ratio, either 8.13:1 or 9.35:1 if this has been confused with the Eng No then the 8 has been read as an "S" this may require the left manifold removal and the correct number being sighted by your local police officer,and him to endorse it on a statuary decaration which you then present to SA Transport Dept
There was at one stage a 101 with the powered trailer (Aust Army test vehicle that was with a 4x4 tour company in WA as their chuck wagon it had a 350ci Chevie V8 in it, I last heard of it when it was for sale in "Just 4 X 4 mag for $100,000+:eek: less trailer,

Were the tourist buses an army thing or a civy thing?
You're not getting them confused with the Bill King 101's I heard of (I thought they were civy private imports and did not come through the Army).
I think I'll hold back on dismantling the back of 30-248 until I find out more about it.
I had a fiddle with 29-417 today. The fuel pump has ceased to function. I have measured 30V supply to the terminals at the top of the tank. Because there are no access panels in the floor, the tank has to be removed to get to the pump. I'll do that when I change it to an original tub. In the interim, I'll find a 24V pump to rig in series.
All the springs in the light switch were rusty and all but two were broken (some in several crumbs). Because of this, it had a current drain and no predictability as to which lights were on at which position. I have dismantled the switch and cleaned it up. New springs arrived not long ago so I'll spend this evening in front of the telly re-assembling the switch.
