Thread: Locked out of my Puma

When working on a car I make it a policy to NEVER leave the keys inside a vehicle with electronic locking unless a window is down. This is not at all unusual across a range of electronic locking devices so better safe than sorry. I ripped the central locking controller/immobiliser out of my wife's Camry for exactly this reason. In the end it wouldn't let her out without forcibly holding a lock button unlocked! It got a basic remote locking unit instead. I Still tell her to remove the key first though.

Must be a Rover thing as that happened to my wife's '89 Rangie - the difference being our baby was firmly belted in his capsule, it was a hot day & I was 45min away with the spare key.

BradW, it was mentioned to me by a dealer not to have BOTH the immobiliser door locker things in the same place at one time near the ignition switch. Something about they cancel out each other and confuse the immobiliser - security system.

I didn't clarify how "near" is. But I certainly got the impression one set of keys in the ignition, and one in your pocket is close enough to cause problems.

This would make its hard to carry a spare immobiliser key, and I don't know why nothing is mentioned in the owners manual.

i try not to leave keys in the ignition either when it's not running, or at least have a door open somewhere for that mystery locking fear. The Freelander I have had for while locked itself mysteriously. It also would turn off the radio when it decided too, car was not running with the rear and side doors open, and suddenly time to turn off the radio. Electronics.....

Having heard about this sort of thing, I don't leave the key in the car unless a window is open.
Make a habit of removing the key and putting it in your pocket.

You only need a spare key and not a immobiliser plip to get back in if you lock your keys in, just a key will unlock a door so you can get to your keys again.

I have had a spare plain key cut for £3 (UK) and then dipped it in melted wax (nasty weather and road salt over here) and then cable tied it somewhere hidden underneath. That way i may get dirty getting the spare but at least i wont be locked out!

Or get a real Defender... no central locking.

(Mind you you can still lock the keys in, but then you have only yourself to blame).

For those that own PUMAS that head to remote areas we need Dan at Mulgo or someoen to come up with a fix that allows us to swtich all that stupid electronic crap off !!

At any rate I am going to get a spare cut...........
