Replacement or fix seat belt inertia reel?

    This thing

has stooped working, as when I take my seatbelt off it doesnt retract.

I think the aspect of it which actually stops it unreeling in an accident is fine, but the "retract" doesn't !

    Can it be fixed ?

Or is it best to replace it ?

If the latter does anyone know where I can get them ? Presumably someone in the UK sells them for a decent price.

Presume also do the actual webbing at the same time?
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

    Vlad,

The whole unit must be replaced, the webbing etc is permanently attached. Measure the stalk/ receiver length, and the whole assembly is available aftermarket at Repco etc. You buy them by the stalk/ receiver length, eg; 200mm, 300mm etc...
not too exxy and at least it meets australian compliance.

I purchased one for the drivers side of my county from british car components in Melb, my father has also put later model (defender) units into his county. Not sure of the price as it was a long time ago

Check that you have not bumped the unit if its not sitting straight and parallel it wont retrack. If it is sitting all square and does not work then its stuffed.

JC - by the "stalk" / receiver what exactly do you mean ?

Do you mean the overall length of "D" in the picture below, or perhaps just the buckle ?

Yes, usually the 'kit' is sold with different length stalk/ receivers so just select the one you require.

I had to replace the drivers side last year when we put our 110 over the pits - from BritParts, the part cost $189.00 (part number EVB000550LNF). Bit pricey, but then I didn't know better. That was January last year.

Something to watch out for is that some of the aftermarket ones aren't the same length belt as the originals, and the stalk may not be a perfect angle.
I replaced a passenger one on my County when I first got it (original had damaged webbing).
I don't recall what brand the replacement was, but it was a generic one that fitted quite a few vehicles.

The receptacle on the stalk doesn't sit parallel with your hip (probably about 45deg off), and there is no way that a larger person would be able to sit in the seat and get the belt around them. The original had about another 10-15cm slack in front of your chest/waist if you extended it fully.

If anyone knows a particular brand that is the same length as the original I'd be very interested. The better half was less than happy that she couldn't pull out a bit of slack and reach around between the seats without taking the belt off - so I'll have to replace it pretty soon after I get it back on the road.

Sometimes if the belt doesnt retract properly, we used to pull all the webbing of the real and spray some silicone spay on it as it fed back on. Dont spray the last meter as you will get it on your shirt.
