During a predelivery on a TD5 110 a few years back we removed a nut from on top of one of the rear wheel arches (box in load space). Someone had left it there prior to paint application and it had been painted over. A good example of Defender build quality control!

I remember a Morris Major Elite with a square shaped lump inside the boot on one wheel arch, under the bitumastic sealer and blue paint. Not seen before at the dealership on any other Elite. Curiosity got the better of the owner and service guys so it was carefully cut around for inspection. Turned out to be a jam sandwich.

This is intriguing, I have a 2009 130 coming in for a few days so I'll take a squiz at that one...

I found one exactly like it in the back of my 90 about 2 weeks after I bought it. I hunted all over and not only can't I find anything loose or missing, I can't even find more of them!

I wonder if someone at the assembly plant has a spot of fun at the new owner's cost knowing that you are going to spent hours trying to find where it had come from...

Maybe used in the assembly process - holding panels on a jig or something, but not actually used in the construction of the car itself ?
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

I've purchased 2 new Pumas in the last 8 months and each of them had one or two of these nuts appear within a couple of weeks of delivery. I'm completely baffled as to where they're coming from... but I do like the conspiracy theory about the guy in the factory having a bit of fun.

Did as good an inspection as I could manage underneath but found no similar fasteners. They appear to be the same colour and condition as others on the car, and with a similar profile, however the others I've seen are a bolt rather than a nut with attached rotating washer.
They seem to be about 10mm across the flats (do landrover use metric fittings?) a bit over three eighths.
I'll try to attach a photo.
    Can anyone help?
PS thanks to all who replied to my clanking transmission while coasting in neutral question.

10mm across the flats? so not so big

My guess would be. to hold the roof on. Fiddly job needing small fingers. you tend to lose the nuts in the internal gutter. (bounce out latter)

but then mines a 85 county so the nuts are a bit different, galv and gold anodized
